The Reverend Jesse Jackson stopped by the OccupyDC camp at McPherson Square today. He said, "it's time we take a hard look at economic injustice." He then made a clear link to past struggles for justice in our country.
His comments make it clear that the current Occupy Wall Street protest, and the worldwide Occupy movement, is another battle in the struggle for the 99%. It is a struggle that has for too long witnessed the subjugation of the 99% for the avarice of the 1%.
Rev. Jackson called the August 28th, 1968 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom "the first occupation." We still fight a struggle that was started over 40 years ago. We renew that occupation - for the justice of the 99%.
It's a fight for economic, social, and environmental justice, and a fight for the millions of American's who will go to sleep hungry tonight, or who will tell their child "we'll have more food tomorrow," but know that may not be the case.
It's a fight to stop money from buying economic and social policy that only benefits the very few, while saddling millions of people and communities with the realization that the American Dream is out of reach for most Americans. It's a fight to put an end to endless wars abroad and wars waged against our own citizens here at home.
The abuses heaped upon war and economic injustice protesters in 1968, and those souls throughout history who have spoke truth to power and said, "No more war on our people" are abuses that the Occupy movement must also endure. We must endure these abuses non-violently, but with an ever growing, determined resistance, with clarity, and with purpose.
In Solidarity,
