In recent weeks, the religious right has been stirring up its followers to pray against the Occupy Wall Street movement.
Just yesterday, the Family Research Council included a vitriolic attack on the Occupy movement in its daily prayer alert.
May God quell the anger of this sad collage of people, stirred up by radical ideologues, encouraged by the press and even misguided officials, and cause it to fizzle. May it backfire as some experts predict, and may God send believers to bring Good News to these people and lead many to faith and peace in Christ! (Ps 2:1 ff; 76:1-12; Pr 29:8-16; Hos 4:6; Mt 5:21-22; Mk 6:34; Jn 10:10-16; Jas 1:20)
This comes on the heels of dominonist "prophetess" Cindy Jacobs claiming that there's some sort of demonic "principality" behind the Occupy movement.
Watch the whole thing here (sorry, for some reason it won't embed).
Looking at this is yet another reminder of just how cockeyed the religious right has made our political landscape. It's stuff like this that drives reality-based evangelicals like yours truly nuts.
I've mentioned on numerous occasions that no thanks to the religious right's constant bloviating about Democrats being godless babykillers and gay marriage lovers, there are districts that give Republicans insane voting margins even though economically they have absolutely no business voting Republican. Take LA-05 and KY-05--two of the poorest districts in the country, and yet they gave McCain 61 percent and 67 percent, respectively.
Conventional wisdom would say that people in districts like this would be right behind the Occupy movement. After all, they got screwed the most as a result of banks getting too big to fail. But we keep hitting a wall there no thanks to garbage like this.
