This Occupation took place in New York City on Tuesday, October 25. Approximately 200 concerned citizens occupied the Panel for Education Policy meeting and, using the human microphone, expressed their concerns to Chancellor Dennis M. Walcott and the committee members, 13 non-elected officials that make decision about education matters for all of New York City.
The Chancellor and his fellow committee members left the meeting in frustration but not before being issued an invitation to attend the General Assembly to discuss education in New York City. The Chancellor refused to accept the invitation. He was extremely bothered that his meeting had been interrupted and was not going to give an inch.
I am in awe. This movement is about so much more than changing our government from the top down. It is about changing the government from where we are at this moment in time. If you are a parent, a teacher, a student, a citizen who understands that a decent education is the beginning to a vibrant and successful community, then you need to see this video.
For those who are hearing impaired, the video includes some captions. It is not complete but attempts to provide enough context to make the video understandable.
Show me what democracy looks like... This is what democracy looks like!
