So the cops have taken away their generators and fuel.
I'm cash-poor, but motivation-rich, so I've sent a request to a list of Solar Manufacturers, as well as various other places, for donations of Solar Charging Stations to get to OWS and get some charging up to replace the bikes.
It strikes me that somebody in the industry would like to show their product in one of its perfect niche's; the production of remote power. Talk about a showcase for products, in the midst of New York City.
Of course, I have to wonder whether it would be helpful, but on thinking about it, I'm sure it could be if it were done right.
For one thing, we don't want the industry to look bad, by putting out poor products. The poor quality yard lights that we see these days are exactly what the industry doesn't want to use to highlight their capacity.
However, if you look at some reasonably scaled Solar chargers, they can actually produce real amounts of power.

Ultimately, imagine setting up one of these of some size per some number of tents, for people to use to charge their lanterns, communications, etc.
I'd think this would be Huge PR for any companies that moved on it, as well as for the Solar Movement, overall.
All sorts of potential win, seems to me. So, if you like the idea, particularly if you know any industry folks, please pass on the idea.
Final note: The response "it won't work, it's not enough power" is expected. So, in brief, they are currently using some bikes. Using the bike they can produce probably at most 200-250W. A 1m2 Solar Panel in the Sun will produce around 180W for the time that the sun is up. It will cost probably $300, and there are the rest of the electronics to deal with.
It would be an amazing proof of concept, though. Better remote living by Solar in New York City (as well as potentially many other Long Term Occupations).
* haven't quality checked this, it was only a quick search.
