Rick Perry’s son, Griffin, has been earning his keep on Dad’s campaign now that he’s given up his gig as an investment banker at Deutsche Bank. You remember: that's the job he had to give up due to Obama's onerous regulations, according to his weepy Mom, Anita
Now that he's working for the Perry campaign, his latest achievement was forwarding some clever satirical Occupy Wall Street quotes from the Toronto Globe and Mail to plug into his Dad's speech.
Dad must have really loved them, because according to Houston Chronicle Blog
A list of satirical Occupy Wall Street-style quotes from Toronto’s Globe and Mail ended up in Gov. Rick Perry’s inbox via his son
including
…one of those FAKE quotes, about the protesters actually admiring hard-working bankers, ended up in Perry’s REAL speech at the Barley House in New Hampshire last week, Mediaite reported.
Perry was discussing the importance of hard work and the American Dream when he brought up the quote emailed to him, saying “I don’t know whether it could be proved or not, but the young man’s name was Jeremy, and he was 38 years old. He said, ‘You know, we got here at 9 o’clock and those people’ – this was in Toronto, I think Bay Street—‘those bankers that we came to insult, they’d already been here for two hours when we got here at 9 o’clock, and when we’re ready to leave, you know, they’re still in there working. I guess greed just makes you work hard.”
The original quote read: “It’s weird protesting on Bay Street. You get there at 9 a.m. and the rich bankers who you want to hurl insults at and change their worldview have been at work for two hours already. And then when it’s time to go, they’re still there. I guess that’s why they call them the one per cent. I mean, who wants to work those kinds of hours? That’s the power of greed.”
The column had “satire” written above the headline: Was this an honest mistake or should Perry have paid more attention?
Hmmm... I think I know the answer to this one. Perry must have skipped taking those useless journalism classes in Aggie-land or he’d know a little more about vetting your sources. Still, when your kid’s such a genius (at least by comparison), why question him? If the quote fits – and more importantly, if it can be delivered with that smarmy Perry smirk – it goes right into the speech. Who's got time to research everything? Makes you wonder how good a job Junior was doing with that investment banking job paperwork.
I have my doubts though… Surely Perry isn’t uh… astute enough to be writing his own material. From his recent performances, he's more the "shoot from the hip" type, walking that tightrope between "presidential" and "third-rate stand-up comedian". As I've said before: it's tough walkin' a tightrope in cowboy boots.
