In what was supposed to be a squeaker, Democrat Liz Mathis solidly defeated Republican Cindy Golding, 56%-43% for an Iowa State Senate seat, thereby keeping Democrats in control of the State Senate. This is a crucial win since Republicans control the State House and the Governor's mansion.
Congratulations Senator-elect Mathis!
Iowa Senate Majority Leader Mike Gronstal has stated repeatedly that, so long as he is in control, the Republican-sponsored amendment to define marriage as solely between a man and a woman which has passed the House will not be brought up for a vote. That means nothing happens on the amendment until at least 2013, and then presumably only if Republicans were to win control of the Senate.
In other news that I think portends well for marriage equality in Maine -- although only indirectly related -- a people's veto against a law that would stop same-day voter registration is winning big, 59% - 41%. That means, statistically, voters more likely to vote for marriage equality than not will be able to register on the day of the 2012 election that will decide that ballot initiative. And it says to me that people in Maine are rejecting Republican messaging, part of which is a stance against marriage equality. Way to go, Mainers!
NOM and it's allies may have been able to turn back marriage equality in California in 2008, but they will come to realize shortly -- if they haven't already -- it's not 2008 (or 2004...) any more. Their time has come and gone. Significantly more Americans now support marriage equality than do not, in incredible turnaround since just three years ago.
Maggie, it's just a question of when, not if. Snuff the whale-oil lamps out when you leave.
