Yesterday Flint had a mayoral election. Normally there wouldn't be a big to-do about it (turnout was around 18.9%) if it wasn't for the fact that Govoner Rick Synder announced while the polls were open that Flint will be appointed an emergency financial manager.
Now Flint knew it was coming. Our city is like most rust belt cities under financial distress. In September it was announced that the city's finances were going to be reviewed by the state. Last week the financial review team asked for more time. In retrospect it seems like a political ploy for implied voter suppression.
By making the announcement on election day before the polls closed there is the implict statement that your vote doesn't matter.
Now Flint has the dubious honor of being the only city in Michigan that will have twice gone into the takeover process.
