Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid had a pithy response to reports today that Republicans are looking for scapegoats in the stymied Super Congress, and the news that Grover Norquist says Republican leadership promised him there will be no tax increases in the Super Congress deal.
That apparently followed Reid's meeting with House Speaker John Boehner and might be an indication of how things went.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) met Tuesday, a sign they might take a larger role in deficit talks, congressional aides say.
A leadership aide said Reid and Boehner discussed a range of topics in Boehner’s office but declined to provide any details. [...]
Reid declined to comment about the meeting as he walked to a Democratic lunch meeting Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Republicans are determined to do their damnedest to deflect attention away from Norquist and their own intransigence on raising taxes, and insist that any problems in coming to an agreement are because of Democratic infighting. Which, thankfully, they aren't. At least a few apparently aren't prepared to sign on to sacrificing the poor and elderly to the austerity gods.
But what do you think is closer to the truth? Democrats refusing to swallow a shit sandwich, or Grover Norquist calling the shots for Republicans? If it means the best possible result for the nation, a Catfood Commission II failure, they can finger point to their hearts' delight.
