We’ve all read the headlines: “Meth-addicted Mother abandons her Children.” But what’s behind those sensationalist headlines? Let me tell you the real story, paraphrased from this video:
Meth addiction, yes, but first came abduction and rape. As this video shows, Becky H. was a mother, a wife, and a registered nurse doing the work she loved. After a brutal abduction and rape, she was emotionally destroyed. A “friend” suggested meth would help, and she was in no condition to refuse. Her addiction cost her her family and her profession, and she was convicted and sentenced to 7 years in prison. This sentence was longer than the rapist’s.
Is this justice?
So what happened to Becky after her release? Unlike the vast majority of released prisoners, Becky was able to find help. She was lucky enough to encounter Ari Kohn and the Post-Prison Education Program (PPEP). Their mission is to read behind the headlines and help the formerly imprisoned – our returned citizens – regain their lives and rejoin our community. This is truly humanity regained.
The Post-Prison Education Program needs your help right now so they can continue helping people like Becky. Becky is now back with her family and, thanks to PPEP, she has regained her nursing license and is helping others. Visit their website, look at their videos, read their newsletter – and then push the donate button. The Post-Prison Education Program will disappear without your help.
For the sake of humanity.
