There's nothing even vaguely funny about The War on Drugs, irrespective of the fact that my income during the years that I was a public enemy (and I have a copy of a 30 year old Wanted Poster to prove it) for being on the other side of said "war" paid for any number of pleasureable personal memories. Offsetting this, however, is the incontrovertible fact that my fleeting good fortune was earned only at the expense of having exploited the gigantic opening caused by a worldwide class of drug warriors committed to pushing a perverted "sense of morality" on millions and millions of their fellow humans engaged in doing nothing more than trying to get by in their daily lives.

So, anyway.

Yesterday I posted a routine marijuana legalization diary, and am pleased to have been engaged in a dialogue with some Kossacks who clearly are world class thinkers and writers on the subject. And then I was pleased to notice that, while my personal perspective was largely not directly addressed, these commenters completely overwhelmed the position of The Prohibitionists.

And then I thought some more and was smacked up side the head by the reality that this particular "debate" is so onesided exactly because there really is no "other side". At least not one that is even vaguely legitimate.

But that then that leads to the questions, at least in my mind, of "who are we, where have we come from, and where are we going". Because an impartial interplanetary observer would look at this and say that the human race is absolutely and completely fucking nuts! I mean, yeah, there's the fact that "We" are just absolutely beating ourselves senseless with our mindless Drug War, and that we would reap a veritable avalanche of social and economic rewards from simply ending a pattern of self destructive behavior that truly seems to proceed for no more compelling reason than that this whole country is stuck on "social cruise control". But, my god, don't we realize that we're corrupting the development of all of the rest of the 7 billion humans? The Taliban, The Kuomintang, The Zetas, The French Connection, The Bloods, Crips, etc. The children killed in the drug war induced cross fire across (at least one time or another) the entire face of the planet.

This is all fallout from us doing violence to ourselves mindlessly. Or mindlessly, but not without explanation. Because, you see, this country may very well only be able to be saved by an "Occupy" movement, since we've already been so thoroughly and completly occupied that most of us don't care whether it's the 1% (in 99% of instances) or drug gangs (really probably in no more than 1% of instances) who are profiting off of our stupidity, off of our self imposed misery.

We just want to keep our blinders on, and in, return, be left alone. But not knowing that until we adjust our relations with almost everything, and everyone, we will ultimately struggle in futility. For we cannot continue a blatant pattern of self abuse, and then hope, miraculously, to somehow straighten out all of the rest of our affairs in this very highly interconnected and interpendent world.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.
