Houston, Texas
In a scene that could have been inspired by the movie "Minority Report,
one North Carolina county is using a UAV equipped with low-light and infrared cameras to keep watch on its citizens. The aircraft has been dispatched to monitor gatherings of motorcycle riders at the Gaston County fairgrounds from just a few hundred feet in the air--close enough to identify faces--and many more uses, such as the aerial detection of marijuana fields, are planned.
Cook County, Illinois is considering one.
FAA sifting requests for drones
The Predator B, already in use for border patrol in Arizona and North Dakota, can fly for 20 hours without refueling, compared with a helicopter's average flight time of just over two hours.
Unmanned Air Vehicles: Miami police plans urban test of Honeywell's micro-UAV
The police department will operate the UAVs, and helicopter pilots from its aviation unit have been trained to fly the gMAV. "The demonstration will be in urban terrain, involving real tactical operations," he says.

Unmanned Aircraft Systems –– previously referred to as "unmanned aerial vehicles", "UAVs", "remotely operated aircraft/vehicles", or just "unmanned aircraft" –– come in a variety of shapes and sizes, and serve diverse purposes. They may have a wingspan as large as a Boeing 737 or smaller than a radio-controlled model airplane. UAS operations always have a pilot in command who is flying the aircraft.
