Today, Egypt's military leaders met and decided to crack down on protesters occupying Tahrir Square. Egyptian police attacked the crowd of thousands occupying Tahrir square with tear gas, batons non-lethal bullets and small armored vehicles, driving them out of the square, according to Al Jazeera reporters on scene. 11 people were killed in the police initiated violence. The police set fire to tents, motorbikes and property abandoned by protesters, creating a Hellish scene in the middle of the square. As the police pushed out the protesters along multiple roads, the protesters came together and charged back, in numbers, along a main avenue back into the square. Thousands of protesters have reoccupied the square, keeping the police at bay. The protesters are asking for more people to come so that they have the numbers to maintain the occupation. This is the first time that Egyptian protesters have occupied Tahrir square since former President Mubarek was driven from power.
The occupiers are demanding that the present leader of the military junta step down. They are demanding a new democratic constitution that ends military rule. The military leaders have stated that they are going forward with parliamentary elections next week.
