Please don't let it be said that the mayors and police forces cracking down on OWS aren't inspiring people. With their pepper spraying and brutalizing and general rights-denying, they have demonstrated to Egypt's regime how to "secure the state."
Egypt State TV anchor: We saw the firm stance the US took against OWS people & the German govt against green protesters to secure the state.
The Scaf's "firm stance" is as, I write this, killing protestors in Egypt.
The violence has been some of the worst since the overthrow of Hosni Mubarak in February when Tahrir Square was the major rallying point for protesters during the 18-day uprising that ended the former president's three decades of power.
Egypt's health ministry said at least 22 people have been killed and 1,500 wounded in clashes between government forces and protesters in Cairo and other cities since Saturday, raising concerns over parliamentary elections due to begin later this month.
But, hey as Gawker points out, the American state hasn't killed anyone...yet.
But American police haven't killed anyone! Indeed! That's definitely something worth bragging about: so far, cops here have only sent a single person tothe hospital with brain damage. U.S.A.! U.S.A.!
Of course, these comparisons can be pushed too far. Americans have more political freedom than do Egyptians, who are suffering under a military regime that more and more is resembling Mubarak's. But surely we can agree that there's a problem when a brutal regime is finding inspiration in the actions of the American government.
