This is a simple request arising from recent news. Please read the entire diary before weighing in. It is very short. Please respect my wishes for direction to the comment thread. I would like to focus on need, not blame and not moral issues concerning food and animal population control.
While not a horse enthusiast in the strictest sense (I am not a horse owner and not an active rider), horses arouse powerful emotions in me. They are the largest domesticated animal (in terms of height, at least) and have been with us for a long time.
I just saw a story on CNN that featured a Clydesdale who was bought at auction by a horse rescue person who outbid someone else who wanted to purchase the horse for slaughter. Sorry, but I was born and raised in St. Louis and I guess the idea of a Clydesdale being slaughtered just strikes me as really really horrible on some very deep level (google: anheuser-busch, clydesdale, and Grant's Farm for more information).
I don't want to engage in a vegan vs meat-eater pie fight. Please write your own diary if you want to get into that subject.
I don't want to discuss whose fault it is that the de facto ban on horse slaughtering is about to expire. Please write your own diary if you want to talk about that.
I would simply like to appeal to those of us who do have any spare money and are looking for a good place to put it to good use to consider donating to any animal rescue organization and particularly to horse rescue organizations. It is usually easy to find a local horse rescue organization but here are a few national links. I haven't had time to vet them. Please, if I have made a mistake in listing a particular organization, just let me know and I will edit the diary. If you have a good link, let me know and I will add it.
Please take the time to investigate and donate to save a horse.
