This is usually such a difficult time of year for me. Five years ago today my grandson Daniel died at the age of five months and five days old. My heart was completely broken. My last picture of him was in a Santa suit taken the day he died. Christmas was never going to be the same and it was always my favorite time of year. This past weekend as a result of disastrous circumstances I met a wonderful young girl I only knew as Little and her parents Moody Loner and MommyP00ka. Little has changed my holiday and my life - I hope in some small way we can do something for her family. Follow me below the fluer-de-Kos for the rest of the story.
Over the last few years I have lost quite of bit of my Christmas spirit. But each year I have tried to do something in honor of Daniel around the holidays. Now Moody and I have been cyber friends on the Great Orange Satan for a couple of years tied together by our common interest in World Of Warcraft. He pretty much single-handedly got a guild up & running in a matter of days and has brought together a bunch of like-minded progressives who have a great time playing an online game together. He even has a really great tradition in-game where he logs on every week and has "Socialism Sunday" where he will help any player with anything or just gather things needed for the guild bank.
I follow Moody here on DK4 and was shocked to see what had happened to them on the way out of Arkansas. If you haven't seen it yet, the diary can be found here:

What struck me was his ability to still find a way to inject typical Moody Loner humor into the situation even though they lost everything but the clothes on their backs. One comment in particular caught my eye:
I look forward (8+ / 0-)
to sharing a personal story that doesn't involve some horrible disaster.
Just as I look forward to not ending sentences with "...but that was in the RV."
Are you on the Wreck List? Horde on Garrosh.

(sorry - don't write many diaries and no idea how to block quote something)
So I sent him a message that I wanted to see them on their way through Connecticut and Sunday morning (thank you brillig) I managed to make the connection with them through a temporary cell phone since they even lost their cell phones in the fire.
We met in a mall. I expected to meet a little girl that was sad (as I am sure I would have been at a young age had I lost all my toys, books and clothes) and instead I met a bright and engaging young girl who is kind and loving and funny and fun! She did not pout nor dwell on what she had lost but jumped right in to a conversation and got to know me and my husband and even initiated a Group Hug as they were getting ready to continue their journey. I can tell you that the beautiful spirit that young girl has is a direct result of the wonderful parents she has. I've always said that friends are family you choose for yourself and I choose this wonderful family to be a part of mine.
After we waved good-bye and got in the car I smiled through tears because instead of this time of year being only a sad remembrance of that beautiful angel I lost - it will also be a time of year when I am reminded of our better angels and of the gifts of love and friendship that a certain child and her family extended in spite of their own losses. I started out to give her a gift and the greatest gift was the one I received from the three of them - the loving spirit of friendship and kindness. My mother used to tell me that miracles happen to people who make room in their lives and their thinking for them. Moody, Mrs. Moody and Little gave me the miracle of appreciating the holiday season and the true meaning of Christmas (well, them and the grinch).
I would love to see all of the people whom Moody, Mrs. Moody (Mommyp00ka) and Little have touched show them just how much they mean to us by giving them some sort of a Christmas and a way to replace maybe a few of the things they lost in the fire. I wish everyone here a beautiful and safe holiday season wrapped in the loving arms of friends and family. I leave you with a song (cuz Moody always closes a diary with a song) It is a song by Trans-Siberian Orchestra that is all about our better angels at this time of year.
