You know media outlets have to be spending half their waking hours hunting down non-stories like this one just so they can take yet another poke at the president no matter tangential, irrelevant or outlandish the accusation may be. This time the implication is some sort of belated treason. Aging right-wing thug G. Gordon Liddy, who used to wow audiences by holding his hand over a burning lighter without flinching, joined in on the fun with an obnoxious Tweet. Drudge gave the story prominence.

This time they used the Obama daughters to run their little smear. Even the Mafia once had rules against that. But then the Mafia had more ethics than these guys.

Here's Liddy, with the tried-and-true oh-so-innocent question-mark attack:

What's the complaint? Manny Fantis at WUSA9, a CBS affiliate, helped expose the Pearl Harbor Day menu at Sidwell Friends' School, where Malia and Sasha Obama attend classes. So now it's the menu which will forever live in infamy on right-wing blogs:

What are President Obama’s kids eating at school on Pearl Harbor day? Japanese food, of course!

Sidwell Friends School’s website shows the menu for Wednesday December 7th, 2011, the 70th anniversary of Pearl Harbor Day, as an Asian food day.
    [...]
It was the bloodiest foreign attack on U.S. soil in the modern war era, until the September 11th attacks in 2001.
Here are the options for Malia Obama and her sister, Sasha on the “Day that will live in Infamy: December 7, 2011.

    Asian Mushroom Soup
    Oriental Noodle Salad
    Classic Spinach Salad
    Teriyaki Marinated Chicken Strips
    Szechuan Tofu and Veggies
    Garlic Roasted Edamame
    Vegetable Fried Rice
    Fortune Cookies

This is so clearly a plot to make kowtowing to the yellow menace part of the crimes of the Obama administration, which obviously isn't satisfied with spreading secret Kenyan philosophy across the land, but wants the Pledge of Allegiance replaced by "Tora! Tora! Tora!" The school explained that its lunch contractor said it randomly rotates the menu and it was mere coincidence that today's turned up Asian. There's a horror-show conspiracy-theorizing thread about this at Free Republic which I. am. not. going. to. link.

As for its being "Japanese" food, phooey.  But then Asian food is all alike, same as Asians themselves. In fact, at least three of those items are Chinese, if you count fortune cookies as "food."

The Chinese, all those right-wing history buffs out there may recall, were U.S. allies during World War II, having already been fighting the Japanese for more than four years by the time the zeros and bombers appeared over Pearl. They might also take note that the United States has not been at war with Japan since before the first Baby Boomer was born and they have begun retiring. Or that it's none of anybody's damned business what Malia and Sasha and the rest of the kids at Sidwell eat.

But, of course, doing so would mean losing an opportunity to drop another turd on their pile of manure declaring that the Obamas love everybody more than they love America.

[UPDATE]: WUSA9 reworked their story later in the day to soften its tone and eliminate the exclamation point that followed "Japanese food, of course!"—replacing it with "Japanese and other Asian items." In a pitiful one-minute commentary Derek McGinty huffed and puffed about the "rage," name-calling and "raw politics" that filled the station's Facebook page and pondered what this means for the future of the nation in an election year. No hint of an apology for, or acknowledgment of, the station's having kindled this outpouring with its xenophobic first-round coverage of the Sidwell Friends' School's menu.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.
