Here's a list of 10 things that Obama has done to advance Israeli security.

1.) In the opening days of his administration, we maneuvered naval forces into the Red Sea to intercept suspected Iranian arms shipments to Hamas in Gaza. The USS San Antonio and its Marines boarded at least one boat. It was also at this time that Israeli warplanes bombed suspected Hamas arms convoys in the doubt with the help of US intelligence and secrecy. These moves resulted in November of 2009 in the seizure of an Iranian-charted ship sending thousands of rockets to Hezbollah.

2.) We formulated a 'Middle East Missile Shield' aimed at protecting Israeli, NATO, and US interests from the threat of Iran's large cache of intermediate-range ballistic missiles. Obama's plan (focused on successful systems like AEGIS & THAAD) doing far more to protect Israel than Bush's 'Star Wars' program of unproven, unsuccessful Ground Based Interceptor...which is ineffective by its nature against IRBMs. The plan includes a large US-manned radar array in Israel and an AEGIS Navy destroyer parked near Israel at all times.

3.) In September of 2009...Barack Obama ordered Navy SEALs aboard AH-6 Little Bird helicopters into Southern Somalia to kill Saleh Ali Nabhan, a senior Al Qaeda terrorist in East Africa who had personally fired an errant missile at an Israeli airliner with 200+ souls onboard over Kenya in 2002 while bombing a hotel in Mombasa that killed 13 including 3 Israeli citizens. Nabhan was killed along with a half dozen associates, his body buried at sea.

4.) Selling Israel some of the largest and most sophisticated arms deals to date. Including bunker-busting 2,000lb satellite guided bombs that even Bush had been hesitant to give Israel.

5.) Securing tough, biting, and unprecedented sanctions against both Iran and Syria.

6.) Killing Osama Bin Laden.

7.) Liberating Libya...a decades long enemy of Israel. To include the death of Muammar Gaddafi...who sponsored Black September, Carlos, Abu Nidal, the PFLP, PLF, and all manner of anti-Israeli terrorists. MUAMMAR GADDAFI HAVING SPONSORED THE HIJACKING OF AIR FRANCE FLIGHT 139, resulting in the famed Entebbe hostage rescue. PM Benjamin Netanyahu's brother Yonathan the sole IDF casualty in the assault. TRANSLATION: BARACK OBAMA AVENGED BIBI's WAR HERO BROTHER.

8.) Nurtured the Arab Spring movement that, while volatile and unpredictable, has as of this moment weakened and destabilized Israel's most immediate and long-standing enemy in the Assad regime in Syria. Assad's downfall potentially removing the number one sponsor, trainer, and shelterer of Israel's enemies Hamas, Hezbollah, and Palestinian Islamic Jihad.

9. Launched a drone strike that killed Ilyas Kashmiri...the mastermind of the Mumbai terror attacks which included the kidnapping, torture, and brutal murder of several Israeli citizens.

10. In a joint US-Israeli operation, and apparently at the explicit instruction of President Obama, we launched an ingenious cyber attack on Iran's uranium enrichment activities. Infecting important computers with the 'Stuxnet' virus that had a two-pronged effect. Firstly it sped up thousands of Iranian centrifuges to the point that they'd break down. But at the same time, the virus made it appear to any Iranian technician that things were working swimmingly.  One estimate concluded that Stuxnet did more damage to Iran's nuclear aims than any hypothetical one-off airstrike could reasonably hope to accomplish. All without risking American lives, incurring civilian collateral damage or setting off a region-wide war.

On Bush's watch...Al Qaeda grew in strength. Hamas took over the Gaza Strip. Iran threw out a reformist government, accelerated its nuclear aims and made Iraq into a de facto puppet state. Syria sponsored a relentless Hezbollah rocket bombardment on Israel with zero consequence...and engaged in an assassination campaign against Lebanese reformers. Muammar Gaddafi became an ally in the 'War on Terror.'

On Barack Obama's watch...America's security relationship with Israel has never been closer. And on Barack Obama's watch...Israel's worst enemies have been weakened, destabilized, marginalized, and in numerous cases...forever eliminated.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

This is very informative. Yet that moron on Hardball last night kept spewing that mindless Christianist rapture-craving nonsense. It was a beauty to see David Corn and Chris Matthews (the sane version showed up) tear that Romney lackey down. Twas a thing of beauty. But I wish they had these facts you've put here to complete teh demolition.

Romney will have a helluva smackdown from PBO if he happens to be the nominee.

The Repubs are trying to win votes, particularly in Florida, by trying to drive a wedge among Jewish voters claiming that Obama and Democrats don't support israel.

Don't let them get away with it.

    •  it sounds like you are minimizing Osama (3+ / 0-)

Emmanuel Goldstein was a fake villian who was invented.  OBL was a real person who actually directed and financed an organization that killed thousands of Americans and wanted to killmillions more, all toward the goal of establishing a feudal theocracy of unimaginable evil throughout the world.

OBL was no invented bogeyman.  He, and the danger he represented, was real.

      wrong when you say this:

and he doesn't support Israel--least that's what Bibi seems to say every chance he gets....

Here is Bibi talking about President Obama on Sept. 14, 2011:

"I would like to express my gratitude to the president of the United States, Barack Obama," Netanyahu said. "I asked for his help. This was a decisive and fateful moment. He said, 'I will do everything I can.' And so he did. He used every considerable means and influence of the United States to help us. We owe him a special measure of gratitude."

and even the Right Wing Daily Caller had this:

On the topic of whether Obama is not as friendly toward Israel as George W. Bush and other previous presidents, Netanyahu said that wasn’t the case.

“They are all friends of Israel, equally representing this friendship of America,” he declared.

So I guess Bibi missed those two opportunities (plus a lot more) to rip on the President.

Again, I don't say this as a supporter of PM Netanyahu -honestly I don't support his coalition in the slightest but, I really think in these discussions that we get our facts straight.

if anything his "advisors" are more hard right wing than he is.

PM Netanyahu and President Obama have a very different vision of what peace should look like in the M.E. Personally, I support the President's vision. That said, one has to understand that Netanyhu is playing to his coalition. He hasn't said 90% of the things attributed to him - most of that is just hyperbole.

Remember there are also differences in approach to social mores that Netanyahu differs from the President. None of this is an excuse but it is an explanation and I can see how Netanyahu's approach would rankle individuals.

Where Netanyahu has failed the U.S. is in his actual policy making. He has put the President on the "hot seat" time and time again by going against U.S. concerns and being stubborn. His coalition is getting more and more Nationalist and restrictive (again opposed to U.S. philosophy). THAT is where there is a problem.

...I can certainly understand how difficult it is for any leader of Israel to do their job, which is, as I see it, protect the State, when the country is so small and if they make the wrong choice they could suffer irreparable disaster.

Sometimes they irk me, but I live in relative security, one bad decision by our gov't isn't likely to render my home uninhabitable, unlike Israel.  It could account for a certain amount of difficulty in dealing with them, which I certainly understand.  But sometimes I get mad at stuff they do.

Israeli defense minister Ehud Barak has said that Obama has been just about the greatest friend to Israeli security.  And I don't think he's saying that because they have the same name.

Obama's situation on Israel is not much different than what he faces with Congress, caught between two obstinate forces unwilling to compromise their extreme positions. Trouble is, Obama's Israel policy is largely beyond the grasp of the Google/Fox consumer. See my post about this at my Liberal Outposts diary.

    Oh, brother.

You know who else was "eliminated"? Hundreds of Palestinian civilians, along with most of what little hope still existed for realising a negotiated solution to the conflict. Congrats.

I spend a fair amount of time reading the literature on the current state of the "peace process", of Israel's occupation, of the Gaza closure, and so on, and all the experts I read - Nathan Brown, Yezid Sayigh, Mouin Rabbani, the International Crisis Group, etc. - are deeply pessimistic about the current situation on the ground there, and deeply critical of the Obama administration's role in shaping it. And yet when I come here on Daily Kos I see all these diaries acclaiming that same administration for its wonderful 'achievements' in the region and even praising it for its enabling of Israel's brutal military rule in the occupied territories. It's almost as if they're just kneejerk responses to mindless partisan drivel that don't actually give a shit about US complicity in the very real misery and suffering of millions of people.
