Bearing in mind that 1 of my most precious childhood memories is hearing Mom sing "O Holy Night" in church this time of year, this version ranks right up there, too. ;D
Let's move to "this day in history!" On this date in 1819, Alabama joined the union as the 22nd state. Then, they left; then, they came back - supposedly although I wouldn't mind the least bit if it left again at all. On this date in 1861, Prince Albert, husband of Britain's Queen Victoria, died in London. Was he buried in a can?
On this date in 2008...
Ah...the good old days... :D
On with The Rachel Maddow Show!
[I had DVR technical issues, so the first 10 minutes or so of the show are in the tech Bermuda Triangle. If I missed something kewl, please make a note in comments. :D]
"Home for the Holidays" - Colonel Lawrence Wilkerson is, I'm guessing, talking about the fact that American blood & treasure will basically be all out of Iraq by the end of the year. I guess I missed something neato from Rachel due to my DVR $hit. Again, please fill in the gaps in the comments! Senator McCentury & his Mini - Me don't think we should be leaving. Well, they think we should be bomb - bomb - bomb - bomb...bombing Iran, so their opinion means both jack & $hit. The civilian experience has been DRASTICALLY different from the military experience during these horrid war years. The GOBP would rather defeat President Obama than act in the best interest of this country; file that tidbit under "No $hit, Sherlock!"
"What Happens in Iowa Stays in Iowa" - Might Rep. Ron Paul win the Iowa caucuses?! No sparkin' way! But, even if he does, it's not like the Iowa caucuses have been great predictors of eventual nominees - especially on the GOBP side - hence Governor Mike Huckabee. :) He's back in IA being his tolerant self.
"Panic Time" - A whole mess of today's Washington Post just wasn't very warm & fuzzy toward Newt. I'm crying a river; OK, I fibbed because I'm really not. :) President Obama would win against Newt according to a TPM poll. That same poll shows a much closer result when Mittens is in the picture. Some states are concerned about "down ballot" issues if Newt's the GOBP nominee. We get Steve Schmidt in studio for Newt duty; it doesn't sound like he's crazy about Newtie as the GOBP nominee, either. I wonder who he does want? "Conservative" support is behind Newt, but it sounds like Stevie's kind of in Mittens' corner. Stevie mentioned the economy should be THE issue the GOBP runs on. Oh please, let's get Mittens on tape more about his economic prowess - especially his Bane - Capital days! :D Newt's mainly being judge by his debate performances to this point; those who support him have no sense of history, yes? The National Review doesn't like Newt, either??!! $HIT!
"Suspicion Accomplished" - And, it looks like we're gonna get Rachel's way more than 2 cents' worth about the horrid defense authorization/indefinite detention stuff. A host of administration officials had previously come out against the horrid language in the thing. A couple of retired generals wrote New York Times op eds against the thing yesterday. Jameel Jaffer's with the ACLU; he's not crazy about either version of this act. Paint me not surprised on that subject! He again reiterated the national security concerns of the current form of this bill because of the militarization of national security as opposed to civilian courts. Oye...getting pi$$ed all over again; I needed that like I need the Black Plague. Closing Gitmo will be infinitely more complicated. Remember President Obama's promise on his second day in office to close the mother?!
I've never been bothered by bugs - not a damn bit! And, that's a big 'ol bug!! Oh well, just step on the mother or, to be more "compassionate" about it, just guide it out the door. :D
