While I am very happy with the efforts to challenge and undercut un-American voter disenfranchisement laws enacted by Republican governors and legislatures, I am saddened to say that one who helped author such legislation in my state will be still representing my area in the Texas house of representatives.
To me, anyone who has fought so hard to subvert the democratic process by pushing for such laws has forfeited her right to hold any post in a democracy like ours. The ouster of Linda Harper Brown (TX HD-105) from her Texas House seat is long overdue.
More below.
Here's part of Harper Brown's statement:
Today, the Texas House of Representatives passed SB 14, which establishes a photo voter identification system in Texas. During debate on the measure, Representative Harper Brown successfully presented an amendment to strengthen the bill by eliminating some flawed exemptions that would have allowed individuals to avoid showing a photo ID at the polls.
"Voting is one of our most important privileges and responsibilities as Americans. Today's passage of photo voter ID gives every voter in Texas more confidence that their vote counts," Representative Harper Brown said. "I am pleased that the bill includes the amendment I offered to close a significant loophole that would have allowed individuals to vote without showing any kind of identification. This is a strong voter ID bill that enhances the integrity of our elections process in Texas."
Does Harper Brown have any clue about the impact of forcing perhaps thousands of Texas voters to have to take time from work to stand in line in state DMV offices to secure such IDs? Did she ever consider that many of those who don't have such ID not only don't have the financial means to get them but because of their working hours are not able to take time off to get them?
Linda Harper Brown is out of touch with average citizens if he doesn't understand any of that. If she feels she cannot function as a member of a legislature in a democracy like ours, perhaps she should move to a place where her voter disenfranchisement philosophy may be better accepted-- like North Korea, for example.
I pray that not only her efforts to subvert the democratic process by disenfranchising voters get severely undercut if not undone. I pray that she gets the toughest possible opponent who will really put her on the defensive over her democracy-subverting disenfranchisment efforts.
