I was watching Book TV over the weekend and came across the sight of a man (in a nice suit) saying something pejorative about OWS. I would have kept listening, at least for a short while (to see if he was going to put forth something resembling a reasonable argument) when he said something about the "hygiene" of the protesters. At that point, I just turned him off, literally (and in every other way).
I had heard this kind of passive-aggressive thing before from these kinds of people, but of course I never heard them say anything negative about the Tea Party "rallies" (which, as you know, included things such as clearly racist-oriented placards). This time, however, what struck me is that this is in fact support for OWS, because in the "greatest city" of the "richest country in world history" there should at the very least be lavatory facilities for people who are just exercising their constitutional rights. And it's not like there are a million people there either! This underscores exactly what OMS is pointing out. With all those huge, impressive buildings in Manhattan, the protesters have to use the lavatories at McDonald's, Starbucks, etc. And with all the Tea Party talk about what the Founding Fathers intended, you would think they would consider how those people actually smelled, if they thought that somehow politics has a significant olfactory element.
