I'm calling this the Santa Claus edition because, well, it's Christmas Eve and it's the second list check for the day... I know, groan if you want, I don't care... :)
In this season of commercialism giving, there are a lot of people who are doing without, but not by choice. Circumstances beyond their control are forcing people to make difficult choices that shouldn't have to be made in one of the richest countries on the planet. Join me beyond the jump for ways you can help... and props to jayden for the colorful tables from this morning. I'm not that talented with html, so I just stole borrowed used his...
But before we get to the begging requests for help, I need to say thank you to some people...
Like a lot of people around here, I've been having a rough time of things. A lot of the same problems as other people with money (or the lack thereof) and job troubles (people I have to work with, the usual).
The other long-term problem I've been having regards my health, and it's not one I talk about a lot. In fact, this is probably the first time I've written about it like this.
I have been battling depression for quite some time. I have my good days and my bad days, just like anyone else. The problem is, without health insurance, it's not easy to afford to get help, even if you want it.
It got worse a few weeks ago. Those of you who live in and around Kansas City probably heard about it when local meteorologist Don Harman committed suicide. Just a few days earlier, the manager of the Welsh national soccer team, Gary Speed, also took his own life. Both were about my age.
The holidays aren't really easy for me. It's not that anyone close to me died around the holidays or anything. It's just a depressing time of year for me. I think some of it has to do with being single at age 41 and the self-esteem issues that go along with that and the depression.
Then something wonderful happened. Around 11pm last night, I checked my email. I'd gotten a message from DailyKos. I opened it and started to cry. Thanks to Nurse Kelley and the small donors, I'd been given the gift of a lifetime subscription. People I didn't know had given of themselves so that I could get something useful. I've been a member here for over 7 years. With my user ID, more than 90% of the users here have joined since I did.
It was like the community was saying, "You matter to us."
So, to the people who made my lifetime subscription possible, I say, "Thank you." You will probably never know how much this means to me.
Now, here's some other people who could use your help...
OKICIYAP FOOD PANTRY DRIVE
Georgia Little Shield led the push to set up the Pretty Bird Woman House shelter and now she is committed to creating a combined educational services center and food pantry for the Cheyenne River Reservation. DailyKos contributor betson08 has been serving as the DKos liaison for the fundraising effort. The current goal is to reach the amount needed to move a large donated modular building. It is an important milestone as it is the building that will house the food pantry and services center.
Donations to Okiciyap are tax-deductible

ROSEBUD PROPANE DRIVE
navajo is continuing the annual propane donation program she started several years ago. Many Kossacks have generously answered the call in making sure that heating fuel is delivered to families in need but there are others on the reservation who still require assistance, especially during the frigid winter months ahead. This is an ongoing winter-long effort to provide that assistance.
navajo's latest diary has all the info and links for donating heaters. If you would like to donate propane you can do so with a credit card and a quick phone call.
To donate propane by phone:
Sherry Cornelius
St. Francis Energy Co.
(605) 747-2542
Open daily 11am - 6pm MST
Please ask for Sherry or her mom Patsy. Typically a minimum order of $150 is required but they have set up an account to accumulate small donations until they can fill a minimum order. Credit cards are welcome. Propane will be delivered either the same day or the next day once a minimum order is reached.
You may also call Sherry's cell phone (605) 208-8888 if the above line is busy.
Rosebud neighbors Pine Ridge Reservation and is in the same economically depressed situation. St. Francis Energy Co. is the only 100% Native American woman-owned fuel company on Rosebud.
If you prefer to mail a check send it to:
Attn: Sherry or Patsy
St. Francis Energy Co. / Valandra's II
P.O. Box 140
St. Francis, SD 57572
Make check payable to: St. Francis Energy Co.
Donations are NOT tax-deductible

DONATE LIVESTOCK
Several Kossacks have mentioned donating to organizations which provide livestock to families in developing countries. Two such charities are:
Heifer International
World Vision
Please contact me via KosMail to include any similar organizations.

ENERGY and ENVIRONMENTAL CAUSES
DailyKos contributor A Siegel suggests making donations to energy and environmental-related charities that promote the values of social justice. Below are two of the charities he contributes to:
SHE-inc
Solar Household Energy (SHE) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization which seeks to harness free enterprise in order to introduce solar cooking in various locations around the world. Solar cooking improves quality of life and relieves stress on the environment. Working with private entities, governments, and NGOs, SHE designs and oversees training and distribution projects in Mexico, Central America, and Africa.
Green Belt Movement
The Green Belt Movement (GBM) was started in 1977 by Dr. Wangari Maathai, the first African woman and the first environmentalist to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. What began as a grassroots tree planting program to address the challenges of deforestation, soil erosion, and lack of water is now a vehicle for empowering women. The act of planting a tree is helping women throughout Africa become stewards of the natural environment.

The DKos lifetime subscription drive continues. Starting January 1st, 2012 only annual subscriptions will be available. Time is running out and we still have a list of Kossacks who would enjoy having a lifetime subscription. We are not here to pressure anyone because we acknowledge that everyone has different priorities and obligations when it comes to their finances, especially during the holidays. But if you are able and willing, please consider giving a gift of a lifetime subscription to a fellow Kossack. A parade of thankful and heartfelt diaries prove that it's a gift that is greatly appreciated!
In the box below is the continually updated list of Kossacks who have been nominated for, would like to receive, or would greatly benefit from a lifetime subscription to DKos. Click the Kossack's name that you would like to gift and the link will take you to their profile page. Once there click the light gray 'give a gift subscription to this user' link to complete the process.
You can also donate smaller amounts through the Small Donor Drive. The donations collected through this drive will be pooled to randomly purchase lifetime subscriptions for those on the list. So far 19 Kossacks have been gifted with a lifetime subscription through this method. You can make a small donation by going to paypal.com and selecting the 'send money' option on the left. Type in KelleyRN2@gmail.com as the destination. You will receive an e-mail notification that your donation was completed. When the lifetime subscription drive ends an anonymous donor has offered to pony up the remaining amount necessary to purchase one last subscription.

Special acknowledgement to Dr Erich Bloodaxe RN for doing the initial work of compiling the various charity profiles and creating the Charity Round-up. Please give him a shout-out in the comments.
Please give thanks to Onomastic, nomandates, Sandy from 29, Cedwyn, Betson08, Clem Yeobright, Yasuragi, and KelleyRN2 and the many participants in the 'List' diaries for their tireless work and amazing tenacity in keeping the drive alive. Your words of support and encouragement have gone a long way!
Also, if you don't want to publicly ask for help in getting a lifetime subscription, please send Onomastic a private message via KosMail.
