Let’s put away the turkey and the stuffing (or keep working on the leftovers!) and start working on selecting the person of the year and the ass clown of the year.

The person of the year is the one person whose actions made the world a better place by advancing the progressive cause.

The ass clown of the year is the one person whose actions made the world a worse place by hindering the progressive cause.

The person and ass clown should have made a substantive difference instead of just being assuming theater.

Make your nominations in the comments below. Please briefly state your reasons for the nomination. For example: “Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI); ass clown for his plans to privatize Medicare.” You may also provide additional discussion if you wish.

The nominations are open now. They will close at 9PM CDT on Thursday, December 29. I will select twelve nominees for whom you may vote starting on Friday, December 30.

May the best person and worst ass clown win!

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

You can add a private note to this diary when hotlisting it:

Mohamed Bouazizi (Tunisia); person of the year. He set himself on fire in late 2010. His death in early 2011 was the spark that set off the Arab Spring and the global occupy movement.

General Secretary Hu Jintao (China); ass clown for his stepped up repression of Tibet. This year, twelve Tibetan monks burned themselves alive as a protest against these policies.

when I read your title, and I was so releaved not be be mentioned in your article as "assclown of the year."

And, I haven't even done anything particular bad this year.  Maybe I need more exercise and vitamin supplements?

Maybe my best strategy is to keep a low profile?

  •  Putin (2+ / 0-)

I would nominate Putin for ass-clown, but the clown part makes it way too light-hearted.  I really worry about the return of a menacing, iron-fisted Russia.  There should be a category for Emporer of Doom or something.  I can easily name Canter as the Ass-clown.

  •  Cantor has easily done more damage to the Union (3+ / 0-)

than any person in recent memory during this economic downturn; he has, almost single-handedly, turned a circumstance into a depression with his brand of obstruction "leadership".

Eric Cantor is a global scourge and he's probably very proud of that accomplishment.  He is the picture on the back of every card in a deck of ass clowns and he is my nomination for ass clown of the year, 2011.

I think Gabby Giffords should be considered for Person of the year.  While I wish I had heard more recently about her continued progress in recovery, and while her notoriety might come largely from the tragic event of the attack on her, her story has the potential for powerful inspiration and we as a people need that right now.   Beyond the inspiring tale of her survival and recovery, I also believe that the instance and piss-poor RW reactions to the instance of her attack deserve some credit for the beginning of the disenchantment of the American press with the teabagger nonsense...even if not the beginning of the disenchantment, then the beginning of the real disenfranchisement, the beginning of the end of the media's love affair with teabag hateporn.

Gabby Giffords exceptional nature might be on display inadvertently but it is there, nonetheless.

So far, he's compared himself to Margaret Thatcher & Winston Churchill.  And his failings to get on the Virginia ballot to Pearl Harbor.  His unrealistic sense of superiority (I'm so unique, I have to be looked at differently), grandiosity & disdain for his fellow man puts him in the narcissistic personality disorder bin.

Person of the Year.....OccupyWallStreet.  In the face of unparalleled suppression, they kept coming & kept coming & kept coming.  The Wisconsin protesters started the ball rolling....they come in a close second.

I will go with an Urban Dictionary definition for ass-clown:

A prick, who is at the same time a jackass.

      First, the prick:
In a year which was a veritable ass-clown convention, Newt gets the crown. Everything wrong with the GOP over the last thirty years: you're looking at it! The walking embodiment of it.

      Now, the jackass:
Romney; I feel almost (almost) sorry watching him pander from moment to moment. If he was convinced that the road to the WH required him to put a hand up a sheep's rear end. his only question would be, "Will there be cameras?" Zero dignity.

PoTY: A tossup between OWS and the proud citizens of Wisconsin who refused to suffer under the whims of their ass-clown.

  •  Obama for Ass Clown of the Year. (1+ / 0-)
    Recommended by:

Sorry, but if it wasn't for OWS, we'd still be talking about debt limits.  Nobody in the administration stepped up and took the Republicans on, and they got creamed in the polls as a result.

I was considering a nomination for Obama for person of the year (as a result of the payroll tax "Dem" win), but that was really more of a Republican circular firing squad situation.

Can all the ass clowns be presented collectively, so it can be an ass-clown circus? Because it's really, really hard to pick.
