So now its Santorum? Really? Based on the recent polling (Here, Here), it looks like it might be Santorum's turn to be the official Not-Romney candidate.
As best I can tell, the only way to understand the republican base these days is that it is a game of musical chairs. That is, the music has been playing as ridiculous candidate after ridiculous candidate passed by the empty throne. First it was Bachman, then Trump, Perry, Cain, Gingrich...and now Santorum. But in a few days, the music is going to stop...and it appears that Rick "Frothy Mixture" Santorum may be closest to the chair. There really is no other explanation for how Santorum, who republicans have consistently passed over in favor of a series of unelectable fools, might come in 3rd in Iowa. Its one thing to be second fiddle...its humiliating to be second fiddle to those jackasses.
What I find interesting is that there is no way the republican base doesn't realize how incredibly pathetic this whole process has been.
Several months ago I predicted that the final republican candidate would be determined in a brokered convention...if Santorum is the #3 in Iowa, I will be even more sure of that eventuality.
11:35 AM PT: Not to mix metaphors here, but I am increasingly feeling like watching the republican primaries is like watching reality TV; perhaps the Kardashians or Jersey Shore. That is, the entire point of the exercise is to feel morally and intellectually superior. The problem is I always felt superior to these yahoos, and I have never been drawn to watching other people embarrass themselves publicly. It just feels icky and wrong. Much to my own surprise, I am not even enjoying watching the republicans at this point...rather, I can only cringe as to what it suggests about my nation.
