Mitt Romney predicts a win ... or a boost (Orig. photo: Pool/Reuters)
Last week, buoyed by Newt Gingrich's plunge in the polls, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney was
sounding confident about Iowa:
Mitt Romney said Wednesday he is playing for first place in Iowa, abandoning attempts to downplay his efforts in the state.
Asked Wednesday whether a second-place finish behind Ron Paul could be considered a win, Romney simply replied "Uh, no."
But today, with a frothy dark cloud in the form of Rick Santorum hanging over his head, Romney is dialing it back:
“I’m pretty encouraged. I don’t know if I’ll come in first, second or third. But I think I’m going to get a good boost coming out of Iowa,” he added.
Well, sure. That's just how a third place finish behind Rick Santorum and Ron Paul would be described ... as "a good boost" for Mitt Romney. Either that or an unmitigated disaster for Mr. Inevitable.
