Stick with me, please. I want to propose something, and I am not even sure if I agree.
Imagine you are a bankster or a corporate titan. Imagine that you just woke up to find your chosen candidate just tied Santorum...Rick "frothy mixture" Santurom.
What do you do?
1. Send some more money to Romney so that he can use his super PACs to destroy the little worm.
2. Give up on Romney and let Santorum (or Perry) go into the general and get humiliated.
I propose that there is a good argument for the latter. Let me explain below the ugly squiggle.
In terms of winning the general election, Romney is clearly the best choice for the GOP establishment. That said, it isn't an easy victory and the more this primary goes on, the worse Romney is going to look. More-so, the longer the primary goes on, the more stupid shit Romney is going to have to say to get the GOP nomination.
Neither of those two things is going to help Romney in the general election. In short...Romney is looking less and less likely to beat Obama.
But here's the other thing that the GOP establishment is beginning to realize...their base actually believes much of the bullshit the GOP has been spewing for the last 30 years...and damn well want a candidate that REALLY, REALLY believes that shit too. More-so, if the base doesn't get that candidate, there is a real chance the party may split.
So what are you...the GOP establishment gonna do?
How about giving the base their candidate...letting that candidate lose in a humiliating defeat in the hopes that the base realizes they cannot get everything the want. In short, give the base an object lesson in why the ESTABLISHMENT really does know better.
Think about it, what would you...a GOP establishment operator...be willing to give up in order to keep the grand alliance between business and evangelicals alive? I am thinking that giving up Mitt Romney and the 2012 election would an easy choice, since its not looking likely that Romney will be able to win anyway.
