I knew Gatewood (perennial candidate for the governorship of KY) back when I was an undergraduate at the University of Kentucky. Whenever his name came up during the intervening years, not often but often enough, I would usually confide that I slapped his face way back then, and for good reason.
Ah well.
Gatewood was a brilliant and unique individual. I have to say I admired him in a weird way.
I remember being at some party or other in a bar with him back in the 90s, and he sat down by me at the bar and perused the snack offerings. I advised him to stay away from one of them (I forget what), and he promptly ordered it. I said, "You don't mind very well, do you?" and he replied without looking at me, "Get used to it."
