Jon looked at the GOP outrage over Obama's appointment of Richard Cordray to head the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Then in a piece that every American citizen should see, he talked with John Oliver on arcane parliamentary procedure as to why Obama did what he did. Or as Jon calls it, "Asshole Poker".
JON STEWART: If Congress now fears the bureau that they themselves created, why not then just pass a law un-creating it?
JOHN OLIVER: What?? Go on record as opposing a vital and necessary agency that will protect the most vulnerable hardworking families in this country? Oh yeah, that'll play great in an election year.
JON STEWART: But you just said they're killing it bureaucratically!
JOHN OLIVER: Exactly. But why shoot something in public when you can just quietly squeeze its feeding tube in the privacy of a hospital shift change?
JON STEWART: So the Congress won't get rid of the agency legislatively.
JOHN OLIVER: That's correct.
And after showing what a pro-forma session is, this is the key that almost no American understands.
JON STEWART: If the Democrats control the Senate, why can't the Democrats move to adjourn to allow the recess appointment? See, the Republicans can't filibuster an adjournment.
(back-and-forth condescending banter)
JOHN OLIVER: Except, Jon, for one thing! According to Article I, Section V, of the Constitution, if the House (controlled by the Republicans) refuses to pass a matching resolution to adjourn, they could force the Senate to stay open in the same pro-forma session!
JON STEWART: I think I just threw up a little bit in my mouth.
JOHN OLIVER: And yet this is what you rejected constitutional monarchy for. So why don't you suck it?
Videos below the fold.
Seriously, do you guys understand how powerful and good their analogy of squeezing a feeding tube during a hospital shift change is to explain how the Senate Republicans have killed just about any and every good piece of legislation over the last 4 years? Make it go viral. Make every American understand this about the GOP when they obstruct.
Jason Jones also had a piece on a
Republican Muslim denied an RNC executive committee position because he was equated to being a terrorist simply for being Muslim. And yet the guy still wants to be a part of the current Republican Party.
Stephen then noted how George Will has
praised Rick Santorum as being "fun".
He then had a devastating piece against Obama on the
NDAA.
He then mocked
Pat Robertson for claiming God spoke to him personally about who would win the 2012 election.
Jon then interviewed
Craig Shirley, while Stephen interviewed
Steve Case.
