So, I caught the first half of Big Eddie tonight. They were talking about who "won" the debate, blah, blah. By now it's pretty obvious that Brill Cream is going to win the nomination which to my mind means the Republicans are more interested in getting rid of the first African American President then they are in having a person that they agree with in the White House. As long as the person is white, that's fine.
But one of the moments that struck me was the exchange between Gingrich and Juan Williams. I don't have the text of it in front of me, but the jist is that Williams "confronted" Gingrich about his constant race-baiting allusions to Obama as the "food stamp President", etc. Williams pointedly asked Gingrich whether or not he understood that this race baiting was "insulting" to the poor and racial minorities.
The crowd booed Williams, and Gingrich seized the moment, declaring that the five Republicans running for President believed work is "good" unlike the "lazy blacks" that this President is giving all of their money to. I mean, of course Gingrich didn't say that literally, right? Obviously. He blew the dog whistle, and all the bigots starting howling. It was a disgusting display of Southern racism, and it was even more appalling because this is Martin Luther King's birthday, and because Gingrich is a desperate narcissist who actually believes he has a shot of winning the nomination and the White House by throwing red meat to a bunch of fucking inbred racists (although who knows? Maybe if he put on a Mitt-strel show, that would put him over the top in South Carolina).
More over the croissant.
Okay, so yeah. That's really bad what Gingrich did, and what happened in the fucking Klan forum that was the GOP debate tonight.
But you know what? As fucking rip-roaring racist and Gingrich is, I was actually as offended by Juan Williams. Fuck Juan Williams. Who the fuck does he think he works for?! The MacNeil/Lehrer News Hour?! I mean, what? What the fuck did he think would happen asking that question in that forum? Not that it's his "fault" mind you. I don't believe that for a second. I'm just frustrated that we have this incredible President in White House who fucking works his ass off every goddamned day for a country full of idiots who don't appreciate him. He doesn't fucking kneel to these bastards, demanding that they apologize to him for "insulting" him, because he's not a weak sell-out who fucking takes money from Roger Ailes and Rupert Murdoch and then turns around and cries about the fact that they and the other Republicans on behalf of which they're manipulating the electorate are racist.
I realize this may not be a popular view in the African American community, nor is it a particularly comfortable viewpoint to express on this blog which is overwhelmingly white.
Look. I get why Juan Williams asked that question. I get what he was trying to do, and why it needed to be done. I just don't think he was the person to do it, and I'm sick of kneeling to these fucking assholes. I'm sick of asking them to apologize out of a position of weakness like I'm some victim of their racist arrogance. For what?! A MULTIRACIAL COALITION ELECTED A BI-RACIAL, AFRICAN AMERICAN MAN THE MOST POWERFUL POLITICAL FIGURE ON THE FUCKING PLANET! To whatever degree you're happy or unhappy with Obama, the significance of that victory and what it represents cannot EVER be taken away no matter how many times they call him the "food stamp President." I don't need some two-bit racist who isn't over integration to apologize to me, and I don't need Juan "Roger-Ailes-signs-my-paycheck" Williams to ask him to apologize on my behalf because WE WON THE LAST ELECTION, GODDAMIT!
Fuck Newt Gingrich. That fucking dough-boy will never be President. A black man has already achieved what that serial adulterer never will. They lost. We won. This country will never be the same because of what we did in 2008, and what we're going to do again in 2012. So now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to have a bit of champagne in honor of Dr. King.
