In no particular order.
There are many reasons why I vote for Domocrats, but they are the biggest by far. Not only do I want to leave them with a world that is even better than the one we live in, I want them to get involved in the political process and know that they can make a difference.
This should really be preaching to the choir here, since the mission of this site is to elect more and better democrats, but it never hurts to look at things from a different perspective.
I want my daughter to have the right to choose what happens with her body, and have access to at least all of the same services that do.
I want both of my children to live in a country where same sex marriage is legal,
and hate crimes and discrimination against LGBT people in the workforce is dealt with swiftly and appropriately.
I want them to live in a world where scientists are free to explore embryonic stem cell research and hopefully save more lives and reduce human suffering. Barack Obama lifted the eight-year ban on embryonic stem cell research in 2009. He also proposed federal funding to further research.
I want the planet they live to to still be thriving and beautiful, but in order for that to happen, we need to have a government that not only believes in climate change, but is willing to protect the environment.
When they are out on their own, I hope that they have affordable and quality health care available to them, as should everyone.
They will have choices to make in less than 10 years regarding continuing their education, and President Obama signed into law student loan reform, to make college more affordable.
Reasons why are only half of it. The other half of this is the how.
I think that the political process should be a positive one. Because people here are so involved, it is easy to forget how apathetic most people are about politics. I know very few people in my day to day life who call their representatives, canvass, call voters, and even simply vote because the common wisdom is it doesn't matter, or it is just voting for the lesser of 2 evils. I also think that a lot of Republicans vote out of fear and hate, and that is not the motivation that I want my children to have.
I plan on setting a good example so they want to get involved. I plan on being realistic, and sharing the ultimate goal with them. I will be sure that they know that change takes time, and that while there may be people in Washington that do not have their best interests at heart, as long as the person representing them does it can get better. I do not want them to give up. I do not want them to get so discouraged that they think that their vote doesn't matter.
