By now, everyone's heard that Newtie's ex-wife is gonna finally spill that Newt wanted a formal "open marriage," rather than go on the DL for his side nookie.

This won't affect any sane person's opinion of Newt.  Anyone who's paying attention knows that Newtie wants a de facto open marriage anyways.  But it will kill Newt for the same reason that Cain's affair killed him.

Conservatives are often accused of not understanding consent.  I disagree.  They understand it just fine; they're just opposed to it.  As long as Cain was accused of violent sexual assault, he was supporting the Patriarchy, and the voters loved him.  But as soon as he entered into a loving and relatively equal long-term relationship, that was the end of him.

Newt's going to have the same issue.  Nobody cares if he sleeps around, as long as he keeps up the most minimal of appearances.  But the moment Gingrich treats his wife with respect, and tries to work with her in an open, honest fashion . . . yeah, no.  The problem isn't that Newt wanted an "open marriage."  The problem was that he was willing to let his wife decline the invitation.

But one thing that won't happen, under any circumstances, is an open, honest conversation about how adult human beings who love one another can work together to get each other's needs met.  Conservatives are simply too inherently disposed to cruelty and lies to be willing to participate.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

...except that Newt asked for the open marriage 6 years into his lies and deceits. You can only claim honesty and integrity in such a situation when a spouse asks for consent before going into affair(s). An honest discussion can then evolve over the needs of each partner and of the relationship, and an intelligent decision made on how to proceed.

Doing it as Newt did is simply seeking justification for the most dishonest way a spouse can treat the other in a relationship.

If there's not consent before the affair begins, then it's defrauding the spouse on the terms of the marital contract, and potentially exposing the spouse to STDs, some of which are life-threatening.

As for peoples' "neeee-eeee-eeeeeds!", they can either get consent of their partner first, or divorce them before beginning the affair, or get to a psychologist and learn how to stop being so neee-eeee-eeeedy.

Testosterone overdose does not justify treating your partner like shit.

And if someone wants to take a gamble on the sexual futures market, they also deserve to be exposed to the risk that they'll lose (divorce the spouse and then it doesn't work out with the paramour so they're left high & dry).

F--- Newt, and f--- Cain, and they can go f--- each other for all I care.  Actually that would be really funny.

Newt's actions to be odious.  Conservatives aren't upset about the affairs; they're upset about Newt's seeking official sanction -- and being willing to discuss the issue openly.

I definitely agree that Newtie's actions are horrific to most human beings.

he wanted a learner's permit.  Question for these serial marryers is why they do it?  Can't they find enough partners with their $$$$ to not have to marry everyone they sleep with?
