The Jane Addams Hull House Association is shuttering its operation after 122 years of serving Chicago's less fortunate families.
Hull House was founded in 1899 by Jane Addams and Ellen Gates Starr, and, in recent years, has committed itself to providing foster care, domestic violence counseling, child development programs, and job training to 60,000 children, families, and community groups.
During the early 20th Century, Hull House was deeply entrenched in fighting for granting women the right to vote, prohibiting child labor, immigrant rights, and other Progressive ideals.
I'm not from Chicago by any means, but the state of Illinois has lost one of its most prized institutions.
