This is just sad sad sad.
From the Washington Post
The Virginia House of Delegates has passed legislation repealing a requirement that girls receive a vaccine to prevent a virus that can cause cervical cancer...The House voted 62-34 Friday to pass the bill, sponsored by Republican Del. Kathy Byron of Campbell County.
The bill now goes to the Senate, where similar legislation died last year when Democrats controlled the chamber. Republicans now control the Senate.
But giving options was clearly not the intent, as the legislation rejected a Republican proposed amendment to continue to provide the vaccine, according to the Virginia Pilot:
The House on Thursday rejected an amendment stipulating that parents still could choose to have their daughter vaccinated after receiving information about HPV from the state health department. The amendment was proposed by Del. Chris Stolle, R-Virginia Beach, a gynecologist.
Why bother listening to an expert in the field, a gynecologist, even in their own party - when it doesn't adhere to their ideological agenda.
It isn't about opting out - that is already part of the law. It isn't about cost containment - the vaccine has been shown to be incredibly cost effective. It isn't about the human cost.
It just feels like more of the "War on Women" that so many state legislators have been engaged in of late.
I am BEGGING You fellow Virginians to contact Your local State Senator. I contacted my very own incredibly conservative State Senator pleading not to repeal this. As my wife said "Good Luck with that" -- at times like this, maybe luck is all we have, but help from the public to do the right thing might help to.
