Last Saturday we spent the day out birdwatching near and along the coast of the Florida Panhandle. At the end of the day we made a small detour to drive out on Alligator Point to check it out before it got dark. We were very glad we did. When we parked at the beach access point and headed onto the boardwalk over the dunes this is what we saw.

Alligator Point is essentially a barrier island attached to the mainland at its southern end. The outer shore (the gulf side) faces west.

At this point our attention was drawn to a pod of dolphins that was lazily making their way northward just offshore.
