By all means, let's let the for-profit health care market manage America's health care. We don't need regulations or a one payer system.
Lois Armstrong and David Daucher closed their for-profit hospice in October to get out from under more than $27 million in refunds it owed the federal Medicare program, they said.
The same week, they opened a new hospice with new owners. As a result, the refunds, owed to Medicare for five years’ worth of overpayments to Sojourn Care Inc. of Tulsa, Oklahoma, may never go back to taxpayers.
Read the whole article. To me, it's a shocking example of the profit motive at work. To make it even worse, it's not just immoral profits from health care, but from hospice care. They aren't targeting just the sick and the weak, but the dying.
Many words & phrases came to mind when I read this. Unconscionable. Immoral. Sick. Greedy. Unfortunatley, not illegal.
We need good regulation and legal recourse againt fraud at a personal level, not just at a business level. Corporations are not people if they can dissolve & reform as a new legal entity overnight. Single payer non-profit health (government) care would be even better.
