Hello there! This will not be a foodie diary, sorry. Foodie diaries will make a return with my next appearance, or when our rat issue is eradicated, whichever comes first. As for what's on deck, I'm still trying to figure out how to photograph the cream cheese coffee cake - which sounds scarier than it is. There are just a few parts of it where two hands are definitely needed, and not possessing more than two, I have to make it when my kid or husband can drop everything and photograph at my command.
Like everyone else out there, I've got a lot going on in my life. I'm actually at overload right now. I can tell when stuff like this happens because I find myself easily distracted. Instead of dealing with the fact that I really need to find a new job or lose my mind, or suck it up and just call the exterminator to deal with our rat problem (the effing trap caught TWO last night. TWO!!!!!) I go into ostrich mode and I spend too much time on Facebook or Ravelry or the Cook's Illustrated website. Or playing hidden object games. (I love these!!!!)
Lately, though, the hands down winner in distraction-ville is freaking Pinterest. How does one describe Pinterest? Well, according to the site itself, it's a virtual pinboard which allows you to organize all the websites you find which inspire you in different areas of your life, and of course, this is true - but to me the value is that when someone finds something that I think is amazing/cool/brilliant/yummy, etc, it's usually from a website I'd have almost no chance of otherwise discovering. So while it is an organizational tool, the value to me is the voyeuristic aspect of looking at what other people are pinning. You then shamelessly steal these ideas (called repinning) and post them on your own pinboards. I'll tell myself that I'm only going to spend ten minutes on Pinterest, but then I get sidetracked - I go off following the blogs that the slices of brilliance come from, and find even more brilliance, and before you know it, an hour has gone by. I seriously need to step away from my computer. In fact, today's diary was going to be filled with seriously cool tips and a link to a great website that I found on Pinterest. But of course, I can't find the original blog it came from.
So, I spend my free time (and not so free time, heh) seeing photos of places I want to go and things I'd love to do in my home, and stuff I need to bake or crafts I need to make. It's loads of fun, but the looking has yet to translate into doing. (Okay, not entirely true, I have made several of the recipes I've found on there, most notably chipotle sweet potato soup, which was ROCKIN'!)
Today's winners? Through Pinterest, I found this freakin' hilarious blog. Do me a favor - check it out AFTER tonight's diary, mmkay?
And this slice of utter brilliance for people like, oh, every member of my family who can never, ever remember where they put their iPod/iPhone/etc. charger.
The funniest thing that's happened as a result of my Pinterest obsession? My husband was complaining about it, so I sent him an invitation (right now, it's invite-only, I guess...) and he's completely obsessed. He got our friend, an interior designer, hooked, too. BWAH HA HA HA HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!! Now we compare numbers on how many people are following us. Sick and twisted family fun for the digital age.
So, how do you avoid reality/procrastinate?
Without further ado, I'm turning the diary over to smileycreek who is doing the comment wrangling and formatting for me tonight. Thanks, smileycreek!!!!
(Thank you, asimbagirl, because this is exactly how I avoided reality today! ---smileycreek)

This succinct summary of the causes of the real estate crisis by bronte17 in Mr K's PLEASE HELP should be at everyone's fingertips for the general election.
From Dragon5616:
In my post, New Diarists: The Spinning Top, Susan Gardner stopped by and left some kind words, which prompted this droll reply from ericlewis0.
From Ed Tracey:
Both a front-page story as well as a follow-up by Electablog took-to-task Michigan GOP Congressman Pete Hoekstra and his racially-tinged Michigan GOP primary ad: dnta points out the economic fallacies in his ad, while hannah suggests that Hoekstra may just not be 'sensitive to American mores' for a simple reason ... he is foreign-born (and from Europe, no less).
and from tonight's aggregator, smileycreek:
In Tim DeLaney's Rescued-to-Recommended The Religious Far Right and Their Sexual Agenda, Liberal Thinking wrote a diary-worthy comment suggesting we Follow the Money in order to understand the right wing's repressive and controlling policies towards women and sexuality.

There were so many great comments in Dartagnan's diary about the Clint Eastwood "Half Time in America" Super Bowl ad that it's almost unfair to choose, but doesnotworkorplaywellwithothers gave us the fascinating political life of Clint Eastwood, MrSpock gave us the Mitt Romney video of "Let Detroit Go Bankrupt" and other delightful quotes we should all have at the ready, and pneuma told us why Chrysler Execs aren't stupid and knew exactly what associations Independent voters would make from watching the ad.
