Dear Republicans,
There's lots of things you've proposed doing to the Constitution in recent years. Modifying the 14th so fewer brown people are citizens; repealing the 16th amendment permitting income taxes; repealing the 17th amendment allowing direct election of Senators; restating the 2nd amendment so that all the judges understand it means that you can mount a chain gun on your F-150 if you so desire; and of course the fabled "life begins at conception" amendment.
That's quite a bit of tinkering with our foundational law, but you seem to believe it necessary. In the spirit of bipartisan cooperation and good feelings all around, I'd like you to consider my proposed tinkering: repeal the 22nd amendment.
The text of the Twenty-Second Amendment
No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once. But this article shall not apply to any person holding the office of President when this article was proposed by the Congress, and shall not prevent any person who may be holding the office of President, or acting as President, during the term within which this article becomes operative from holding the office of President or acting as President during the remainder of such term.
You can probably guess why I want to repeal the 22nd. Seven reasons, named (alphabetically)
- Bachmann
- Cain
- Gingrich
- Paul
- Perry
- Romney
- Santorum
You guys have no one to replace Barack Obama with. No one running is actually fit to debate him - yes, dear Republican reader, Gingrich would be humiliated - or has anything like his decency and integrity.
And this is not likely to change in 2016. The reason is not that there are no smart and decent people who call themselves Republicans; the reason, oh Republican friend, is that your party insists on being lied to, and thus only fools, frauds, or a combination of both can even make the attempt at gaining the nomination.
So, let's repeal the 22nd. Let's just keep electing Barack Obama President until you, as a party, grow up. He' young, he's healthy, he can run the country for the next 12 or 16 or 20 years until you get over your desire to elect a right-wing talk radio host President.
