It is being
reported that sometime today the White House—probably President Obama himself—will announce an "attempt to accommodate" the Catholic Church on the issue of providing women with basic health care:
One source familiar with the decision described the accommodation as “Hawaii-plus,” insisting that it’s better than the Hawaii plan — for both sides.
In Hawaii the employer is responsible for referring employees to places where they can obtain the contraception. [...]
This announcement would not go that far. Sources say it will involve health insurance companies helping to provide the coverage, since it’s actually cheaper for these companies to offer the coverage than to not do so, because of unwanted pregnancies and resulting complications.
So the White House will announce this "accommodation," which will accomplish nothing given that the Conference of Catholic Bishops—who apparently now dictate health care in America—have said that the only acceptable answer is:
... removing the provision from the health care law altogether, he said, not simply changing it for Catholic employers and their insurers.
Which only leaves room for more "accommodating" or for standing firm now for basic health care for all American women ... which apparently isn't going to happen.
Stay tuned.
