CHILD SEXUAL SLAVERY

Alone

“I wanted to put the audience in the shoes of this guy, who at the end of the film, closes his eyes and runs away,” McCullum said. “He leaves her alone in the room, because he is too afraid to face the truth. He represents our society, afraid to really admit there is a problem. If she gets saved in the film, the burden of action is taken off the viewer, when today’s truth is that most of these girls will not be saved.”

Child pornography is one of the fastest growing businesses online, and the content is becoming much worse. In 2008, Internet Watch Foundation found 1,536 individual child abuse domains. (Internet Watch Foundation. Annual Report, 2008).

Of all known child abuse domains, 58 percent are housed in the United States (Internet Watch Foundation. Annual Report, 2008).

The fastest growing demand in commercial websites for child abuse is for images depicting the worst type of abuse, including penetrative sexual activity involving children and adults and sadism or penetration by an animal (Internet Watch Foundation. Annual Report, 2008).

CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE

CSA

Child sexual abuse has been reported up to 80,000 times a year, but the number of unreported instances is far greater,
Pay attention
The first indicators of sexual abuse may not be physical, but rather behavioral changes or abnormalities. Unfortunately, because it can be so difficult to accept that sexual abuse may be occurring, the adult may misinterpret the signals and feel that the child is merely being disobedient or insolent.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

    •  Message for children (4+ / 0-)

I think we should have a recurring message for children, in every diary.

According to DK stats, 1 in 25 visitors to DK is younger than 18 years old.

I think we should include a hotline to CSA support group,  24/7.

According to those stats, if 1 in 25 is younger than 18 years, and we know about 1 in 5 children have or have had CSA, I estimate 1 in 125 readers of these diaries is being or was abused!

Does RAINN have a 24/7 hotline?

A phone number, a statement, you are not alone, here's how to get help, talk to someone you trust, a teacher, principal, counselor, minister. You are not alone. You can escape. Or whatever phrasing is best for the kids.

Please post this prominently in your diary?

Can't stay, gotta run.  Good diary. Good title.

A phone number would be nice too. Some kids might not have temporal or spatial access to a computer for a l0-15 minute interchange with an online counselor, but they could call from a friend's phone at school, or any phone really, as long as they remember that most cell phones keep track of calls.

Hey kids, don't use a phone your attacker might see later, okay?

911 should work too, I guess.

I must admit I have no real clue as to what actually needs to be said to a child to make more likely that what they read will encourage them to move through their fear/entrapment. That would be good to learn.

And absolutely, we can provide that candle in the window....

Immigrant children can easily be smuggled in.  And how do we track those numbers unless somehow they're discovered?

A recent story in the NY Daily News of a young woman, teenager, who came to the US on the promise by a boyfriend that they wuld make a life together. Instead she was pimped out. She was afraid to speak with anyone, any authority, because she was warned that she would never be believed and would suffer worst under immigration authority's hands.

She finally made a break, went to a bodega where the owner called the cops since she'd been pretty badly beaten. And from there, her story unraveled. And they got the ringleader of the sex slavery ring. She said some beng held were young, very young.

She can't return to her home country. She would most likely be killed. And so even though she'd rather return to her family, she now lives a life of exile.

I'm glad you brought up this issue, too.

    You stay strong, too, TravnTexas.

    Thanks for this diary.

  •  Behavioral change is the hardest to see (5+ / 0-)

We may only see children occasionally and not see small but significant changes.  Acting out is obvious, but more often I think that withdrawal would be a bigger warning. Pulling back by a once open and happy child, or quietness from a normally chatterbox child, and one I know too well - suddenly wearing more layers of clothing.  Extra sweaters or jackets and keeping them on even when it may be too warm. A physical layer of defense...or to hide marks from bruises.

Lots of warning signs...and we need to be observant without being intrusive.

Lots of young trees...a really, really big forest...

in a Tree Climbers diary mean to you?

In other diaries, I click because I agree, or because a commenter said what I was thinking, or because it's funny, or because I think the whole gestalt of the diarist and the commenters represents something enormous and way  beyond words. For instance, sometimes in an IGTNT diary I will click everything in sight. It becomes a meditation, and for me an IGTNT diary can be a meditative spiritual experience.

If someone says something that I consider way off the mark I will definitely not rec that comment.

Here, though, in the tree, I have many different nuanced emotional reasons to click.

I can sketch some of those in, but I find it very difficult sometimes to give words to feelings. And of course this is a text-only medium, so a lot of the nuance is washed out.

Sometimes I click to indicate support.

Sometimes if someone has just voiced a horrible experience, I click to say I witnessed that. I heard you.

It seems there are more reasons, but I can't think of them right now.

The funny thing is, I think to myself that the other person actually understands and interprets my click in the same way I intended it.

Does this resonate with you? Any other reasons for you?

we haven't had many tree climbers diaries but even if someone visits and makes a positive contribution to the discussion, whether i really understand it completely is less important than clicking and thanking them for the visit.

i like to think it encourages folks to come back when they see a 'tree climber' heading.

I hope I do not hurt your feelings, Roxine, and you probably worked a long time on it, but I am sorry I do not like the acronym.

I wish I could talk to you instead of trying to type it in text which carries so few emotional clues.

I can't put into words the reasons and nuances right now, as I am at work.

Tree Climbers is such a joyful, childlike, exploratory, and safe-from-the-events-on-the-ground concept.

It feels to me, right now, that when you try to fit Tree Climbers into TREE CLIMBERS, you change the concept of it into a left-brain structure that takes away from the connotations and joy and freedom of the Tree Climbers, a vivid image.

just my thoughts, gotta go, I'm late.
