Hi guys
I wanted to let you know about this very cool event happening at Occupy Wall Street... The “Occupy Commons strategy workshop: reclaiming the Commons as a social theory of collective action” will be held at Making Worlds: an OWS Forum on the Commons in NYC and online, in New York, Feb 18, 2012 AND online at The Future of Occupy site Feb 14-23. Here is the link...

The “Making Worlds: an OWS Forum on the Commons” will reflect on the direction and aims of the Occupy movement and to articulate strategies for the future.
Information: http://makingworlds.wikispaces.com
George Por is a director of the London-based School of Commoning, who were an early proponent of the alliance between the democratization and commons movements, which was the focus the School’s first public workshop in June 2011.
The title of our session on reclaiming the Commons as a social theory of collective action, at the OWS Forum will be a hybrid (online-onsite) workshop using an innovative educational design. George will address the OWS Forum in New York from London via Skype.
The Occupy movement is redefining many aspects of social life, including what a workshop is. For us, gone are the days when a workshop simply meant a space with tools, workbenches and supplies, or a time to spend on listening to a sage on the stage.
This event will reconnect with and renew what a “workshop” was in the pre-industrial era: a supportive environment, where people assemble to invent, prototype and produce useful objects. In the digital era, it also means developing useful ideas together, making connections, and co-creating something of value to the community.
For more information and to join this free online workshop, please visit its home page. If you like what you see, please help us get the word out about it.

Under the guidance of thought leaders including:
Anuradha Mittal (development & trade),
Andrew Simms (new economics),
Richard Heinberg (postcarbon economy),
Gar Alperovitz (democracy & co-ops),
Juliet Schor (consumption & sustainability),
Susan Witt (local sustainable economics),
Joshua Farley (ecological economics),
Sheila Jasanoff (environmental law),
Nikos Passas (white collar crime & corruption)
We are starting an action-based dialogue on how to build and transition to a new economy which prioritizes wellbeing and ecological integrity. In March, we will host 100 student and youth organizers and activists from around the country for two days to build a diverse, creative and inspired movement for systemic change, drawing on our combined experiences and inspirations.
Global financial collapse, the conversations sparked by the Occupy Movement, and upcoming convergences like the Rio+20 Earth Summit offer the unique opportunity for us to begin redesigning our economic model from the bottom up.
From the rise of participatory democracy to the radical redesign of financial systems, from cooperatives to co-production, from alternative indicators of progress and value and moving beyond GDP to the re-imagining of the commons, our goals are many.
These are ideas whose time have come.
We need to take on the economic model at the center of the multiple and interrelated crises that face us - climate change, poverty, inequality, the breakdown of family and community, the wellbeing crisis, global health, finance, democracy, energy, development, consumption.
It's time that we come together and cross-examine our common future, time we craft a plurality of alternative visions for what is to come.
In the words of E.F. Schumacher "Perhaps we cannot raise the winds. But each of us can put up the sail, so that when the wind comes we can catch it." It feels the winds are rising, and we need to be ready.
The early application deadline is February 15th and applications will close February 21st, though applications submitted before then will be reviewed on a rolling basis.
With hope,
Rebecca, Kyle, Nico, Joe, Rina, Katrina, Nishin, Natalie, Sachi, Jon, Nicole, Collin, Jono, Sophia, Sam, Kristen, Charlie, & Serena
