Carolyn Maloney, Eleanor Holmes Norton walk out of contraception hearing
"What I want to know is, where are the women?" asked Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.) before walking out. "I look at this panel [of witnesses], and I don't see one single individual representing the tens of millions of women across the country who want and need insurance coverage for basic preventive health care services, including family planning."
(Emphasis added).
Rep. Darrell Issa Bars Minority Witness, a Woman, on Contraception
“Where are the women?” the minority Rep. Carolyn Maloney, D-N.Y., asked early in the hearing.
[ ... ]
Ranking committee member Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., wanted to invite third-year Georgetown Law Center student Sandra Fluke to testify, telling Issa it was important to have at least one woman at the witness table because the issue involved health repercussions for women. Read Fluke’s full testimony here.
[ ... ]
Rep. Cummings accused Issa of creating “conspiracy hearing” and stacking the witness list by refusing to allow women “commits a massive injustice by trying to pretend that the views of millions of women across the country are meaningless.”
(Emphasis added).
Is it April Fools Day or something? Is this a joke? Where are the women on a panel that was convened discuss the topic of women's bodies and contraception in the context of religious freedom?

Darrell Issa Compares His All-Male Anti-Contraception Panel To Martin Luther King
House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-CA) has been catching flack for holding a panel today relating to women’s access to birth control that featured zero women, but Issa won’t let the fact that few Americans agree with his position deter him. Taking to Twitter this evening, he fired back with a always-appropriate Martin Luther King Jr. comparison:
Issa’s hearing also featured giant posters of King and other historical greats [ ... ] But as Adam Serwer points out, King actually wrote that he hoped state and federal governments would appropriate “large sums of money” to educate people about birth control.
I also noticed that Darrell and or his
Twitter team have been very busy today and this evening.
Where are the women??!!
You know what to do.
