"Morality" does not require religion, it requires common decency.
This nation is on a new path where morality is not based on religious dogmas, but is instead lit by the spirit of tolerance. A path where being moral has nothing to do with a ‘holier than thou’ sense of convoluted religious teachings, but a sense of realizing that humanity matters more than a church and that our neighbor’s well being is just as important as our own. The right-wing cannot claim to follow a moral path yet hold hatred in their heart for those who think differently from them or for those who make personal decisions they don't agree with.
The right-wing cannot claim morality and yet refuse to carry their neighbor’s burdens. They cannot claim to follow a moral path and believe that any human being is worth less than they are.
While I'll admit that I'm obviously not a Christian, those who are cannot cut funding for the poor so that the wealthy can keep their tax breaks while claiming to follow a religious leader who based his entire teachings on love and despised greed. I can imagine Jesus coming to earth today, witnessing the decisions of his so called followers, and voluntarily nailing himself to a new cross in the hopes of starting all over.
Most would agree that loving your neighbor is a common sense principle. Where is love in denying food to the poor. Where is love in delaying healthcare funds to sick ground-zero workers? Where is love in taking money away from the elderly and the disabled? There is no love anywhere in the Republican game-plan.
If Jesus were to ever actually “come back,” the best miracle he could ever perform would be to transform right-wing hypocrisy into true love. If his formula for transforming objects only requires a minute quantity in order to achieve optimal results then he will have no trouble whatsoever.
Those who claim to hold religious and moral values have above all else proven nothing more than their desire to rule over those with different beliefs and/or body parts than theirs.
Morality is not the sole intelectual property of religion or it's members. Morality does not require multi-million dollar megachurches or golden altars. The simple home of morality is built using common decency, tolerance, and love.
Those who scream of morals should realize that when it comes to claiming morality, neither religion nor religious-based opinions matter. The only thing that matters is that they love their fellow human, regardless of the personal decisions that human makes or who that fellow human falls in love with.
They scream of the need for this nation to "wake up." On this we agree, though what we’re sleeping through is where we differ. The religious right needs to wake up and realize that they can’t claim to follow a man that would undoubtedly weep at the very thought of their so called “values.” Values that consist of denying liberty from those desperate for liberation. Values that deprive the unhealthy of health care. Values that have no value.
Contrary to what they believe, we are not in the process of redefining morals or hijacking morality, we are simply on the verge of reclaiming them as a way of living for all instead of a tool used to distort and abuse.
