GUS (Gave Up Smoking) is a community support diary for Kossacks in the midst of quitting smoking. Any supportive comments, suggestions or positive distractions are appreciated. If you are quitting or thinking of quitting (or want to support quitters), please - join us! We kindly ask that politics be left out.
You can also click the GUS tag to view all diary posts, or access the GUS Library at dKosopedia for a great list of stop-smoking links. Check it out!

A message to all quitters: you don't have to avoid GUS if your latest attempt to quit didn't work out. We won't give you a bad time and we consider the attempted quits as "practice" for the real quit.
It's that time of year again, Carnival Season, a time of festivities and excess, culminating in Mardi Gras, Fat Tuesday, Shrove Tuesday, Pancake Day...whatever you want to call it, it is for many people the last hurrah, the final day of indulgence before Lent, a time when those who observe the custom undergo a period of ritual fasting or give up favorite foods, drink, or other habits until Easter weekend.
Those of us who have dabbled in behavior modification or abstinence of any kind are probably familiar with the rationale behind the impulse to have a final, no-holds-barred blow-out prior to embarking on a more austere regimen or path of action. There's a kind of "smoke 'em while you've got 'em and consequences be damned!" mentality that seems to make more sense the closer a period of abstinence looms. Knowing something will not be available to you after a certain point enhances the appeal of getting all you can of it while the getting's still good.
The fact that this sort of "let the good times roll" mindset is appealing even to those who don't participate in the second part of the equation---the actual giving up of things or avoiding behaviors---means that that a climate of overindulgence may arise. Opportunities for just one last drink/smoke/dessert/what have you are rife and hard to avoid, never more so than when you're surrounded by others bent on doing those things.
Those of us with addictive personalities in particular may struggle with this sort of situation. Our usual support system or circumstances that keep our impulses in check may be weakened or absent entirely. We may struggle with increased opportunity to indulge in whatever it is we've tried to avoid or behaviors we've tried to eliminate.
We may even be feeling pangs of peer pressure for the first time in a while: the old "...just one won't hurt" or "...c'mon, join us for one..." can be powerfully appealing if your defenses or your guard are already down.
It's probably no accident that most of my dreams that involve smoking involve socializing or being at a party, since that's the setting where I initially picked up the behavior. I formed some deep, positive associations between socializing and the behavior, and even though that smoking actually led to less interaction with my peers as the years went by and fewer friends and family smoked, and it was a less-than-positive experience overall, my subconscious clearly clings to those links.
And even now, years after quitting, the very few times when I experience cravings are when I'm in a social setting, I've had a drink or two, and my normal, rational, "no, I don't do that anymore" train of thought might have been derailed. Because in the moment, all that crosses your mind is some variation of "...it would be sooooo easy." And it would be, in the short-term at least. Long-term? Not so much.
Fact is, it's easier than most people realize to let the good ol' bad ol' times roll again and re-start the addictive process. For that reason, it's not a bad idea to be on your guard if you know you're going to be facing times like these, and to have a plan in place to help you cope with temptation and avoid falling off the wagon (or parade float, if you will).
I promise you, it's entirely possible to have a good time without resorting to old habits that die all too hard, and it's a lot easier to wake up the morning after free of regret.

Has your life been affected by smoking or smokers in your life?
Feel like providing a supportive place for quitters and would-be quitters to hang out? If so, we would love to have you write a GUS diary or host an open thread! Please sign up in the Butt Can (Tip Jar), and name the day and time that works for you (AM, PM, late-night, early-bird, lunchtime, whatever...)
Diarists in regularly-scheduled time slots are listed in bold.

Help!! As you can see, we still have a bunch of open slots on the schedule. If you can spare a few hours, please consider hosting! Not sure where to start? Go here to find out how to write a GUS diary the easy way, or just ask for help in the Butt Can (Tip Jar). Seriously, it doesn't have to include specific elements or require all sorts of fabulous diary formatting skills. The regulars will make sure stuff gets carried over from diary to diary, so if you want to just tell your story or provide an open thread and host for a few hours, that's cool too.
