Read it.  Pass it on.

She’d done what she’d heard whispered about at work in the diner, put a red kerchief on her window sill and closed the sash, just letting it hang there, and after about three days she’d noticed it was gone. In its place was a little flowerpot with a little violet sitting precariously on the ledge. She’d found the packet with the pills and the paper inside the dirt, under the roots, and almost wept with relief.

Now, she waited for something to happen. Maybe the cops would come. Maybe it was all a set-up. Her kids slept on. She could hear her upstairs neighbor kick on his video game machine and load some game with a lot of machine guns.

There was a knock at her door, and Rachel felt her heart almost stutter. She plodded to the door. Maybe she could just ignore it and it would all go away. She was in the process of reaching for the doorknob when she was seized with a cramp and she had to freeze, suck in a breath. No, there was no going back, not since she’d swallowed a few pills the day before.

She swung the door open and was grabbed by the arms before she could even say anything.

“This won’t take long,” someone hissed in her ear. “We love you. Every part of you belongs to you.”

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

Thank you for getting this posted. It is an incredible short story about what could happen if we aren't vigilant about the attempts to criminalize abortion and birth control.

You might want to expand this a bit and put a small snippet of the short story.

    •  Here is a small part of the story. (4+ / 0-)
There was more, of course. She understood that she had taken mifepristone, and that if she hadn’t yet miscarried, then she’d need the second drug. More importantly, she needed to get rid of the evidence. Terminating a fetus in any way was a crime, even if it was an accident. According to the cop she saw last time, there were no accidents, only what he called “accidents”, with finger quotes.

Rachel hadn’t been sure what he had meant by that. What she did know was that she had three kids, a bad job, and an ex-boyfriend who’d thought condoms were the devil. He’d said that once, that condoms were the devil, and when she had laughed at him, he’d smacked her one across the face. She might have been happy, or at least okay with marrying him for the added income until that had happened. Then three days later, the bruise still fresh on her face, she’d taken the test, seen the pink lines, and thanked god she hadn’t used the local clinic for the free pregnancy test. Sure it was free, but the moment it was positive, you were entered in the free natal care monitoring system.

I've been suggesting to vote for Sanitorium in MI or AZ or anywhere an open primary is held. We will never get the contest we want, that we win in a landslide, where we can bring the focus on social issues in a winning way against a nutter if we get Romney and not Icky Ricky.

    It's a fight worth having.

Also, if the economy reverses or stalls again, if gas goes up, we need an opponent like Santa to permit us to change the subject, and only he gives us that like no other.

If unions turn out to vote for Rick in MI or AZ, and I've heard that was happening by by none other than Karl Rove on Faux, he can win it if registered Dems also show up and vote for Mr. 1955...

  •  BTW, imagine this exchange in the fall... (6+ / 0-)

Obama: contraception has benefited women in many ways.

Ricky: Women are harmed by it, because they do so outside of wedlock and...

Obama: Senator, many married women use them, too.

Ricky: If a child happens in marriage, why is it a problem?

Then he probly goes on an on about his faith seeing bc as wrong for a married couple.

Gee whiz, it's 1964 again with a new cast of characters and the same landslide result for Democrats!

Do not--do not--take these sleazebags for granted. They've been known to fuck with vote counts and recounts and such.

He has no chance against Obama. ZERO. That's why I would vote for him if in MI. All registered Dems should, like the unions already are.

        •  I'm sure that's happening in primaries (5+ / 0-)

but my point stands--do not take a landslide for granted, precisely because they cheat.

        •  yeah but we still have to work for it. (0+ / 0-)

GOTV like your life depends on it.

The enemy has been passing "voter ID" laws and other crap they'll be able to use to keep people from voting.  And don't forget hacked voting machines.

The enemy will be out there organizing through their megachurches and cell churches and other dominionist channels.  We have to do as well or better.

Think of Wisconsin where the Recall Walker campaign got a gazillion more signatures than the law said they needed, in order to get the recall on the ballot.

Wisconsin set the example, so we know what we need to do and how to do it.

And in the end if it turns out to have been "overkill" that's a good thing too.  Goldwater got 38% of the vote in 1964.  Santorum getting any number less than that, even 37%, would be an enormous, huge, crushing victory for our side.

We should be aiming not just to "win" with 50% + 1, we should be aiming for that crushing victory with Obama getting 70% and Santorum getting 30%.  Hell, aim for an 80-20.  Aim for the coat-tails.  Aim for both the House AND the Senate.

Aim to crush the Republicans so hard they become a regional party at best, and irrelevant to national governance.

That is what Democracy looks like, and that is what VICTORY looks like.

"Minus two votes for the Democrat" equals "plus one vote for the Republican." Arithmetic doesn't care about your feelings.

I read it this morning also, and I'm still reacting. The story is intense. Every woman should read it.

This will be on a t-shirt, and on my body before the day is out.

Indeed, everyone should be reading this.

And it is an excellent idea for a t-shirt.

much trouble, but sometimes for something that I want to "post" right now, I'll just use a sharpie marker.

I have to run errands this afternoon, so that means it's sharpie marker time. I'll do something nicer later.

This needs to go viral, IMHO.

It even has that vibe of something you'd read about in a book like Orwell's 1984 or Zamyatin's We, or even something by Pynchon or by John Brunner (Stand on Zanzibar) that the Resistance does to speak out against the Regime.

You can have T-shirts printed and sell them on dKos, just put up a diary and watch the orders come in.

I'd recommend using high-quality T-shirts for this, and the full range of sizes and a rainbow of colors.  The more the merrier to get more people wearing them.

Personally I like black, dark green, dark blue, as background colors.

Put the slogan on the front and on the back, so it's visible even if someone is carrying a knapsack or has their arms full with a kid or groceries.

Break it up like this to use the largest possible lettering that will fit:

          BELONGS TO YOU!

That, in block capitals, in an easily read font, not a "condensed" font (hard to read) or some complicated font (ditto).

Do the another version in mixed upper and lower case for people who don't feel quite right about the "shouting" implied by all block caps:

          Every part of you
          belongs to you!

This could truly become the slogan for the decade.

Whoever thought of it deserves some kind of award.

(BTW, aw shucks and a blush, you're using one of my quotes s your sig, thanks...)

EVERY PART OF YOU BELONGS TO YOU! is a perfect slogan for these times, when the Republicans want to stick a flashlight you-know-where and when faceless corporations want to "track" you like stalkers minus the overt violence.

If the stinky Republicans want to start a "personhood" movement, we'll show them personhood alright.  That living persons, biological persons, not corporate "persons", not zygotes, and not spermatozoa, have freedom, have dignity, have rights, and have self-determination, that will not be taken away.
