Join us every Monday night for drinks at the Daily Kos community political poetry club
Your own poetry is always welcome in the comments
Bongos, berets and turtle neck sweaters optional
The keypad is mightier than the sword
A message from off planet.
They are watching us from afar and it seems we are worthy of some attention.
That the messages came in the form of poetry is fascinating and it is also interesting that my friends in Australia, France, India, Japan, and Brazil also received poetic messages this week. Every one of the messages was perfectly targeted to the country in was sent to and displayed a scholarly knowledge of that nation's language, economy, politics and social structure.
We all wonder about the next communication from these beings and what the future may hold...
The messages, unedited, below:
On Awareness
They are starting to wake up and search the stars
It only took them a millennium to begin to shed
Their superstitions and their nonsensical religions
Evidence before the eyes convinced first the artists
Who fought a valiant battle against a rear guard
Composed of those who would deny the truth of it
Who would, instead, cloak beauty in a veil of
Leadership, dominance, false hope, even life
After death, everlasting heaven where venial sin
Is washed away. Such a vacuous, selfish notion
Designed to forgive bad behavior here and now
On the promise of death-bed repentance.
On Survival
I watch a small blue planet through my scope
(It's my duty, here at the institute)
Each rotation, in the upper sector, an anomaly appears
Glows hotter, speaks louder, seems sadder.
In spite of its small size, this oblong shaped land mass
Appears to use almost 25% of the planet's resources
Appears to have no notion that the planet is running out
Of fresh water. Will be parched inside a century.
My sensors detect that the dominant life forms
Have adapted well to the large brained mammals
Who despoil their environment at every turn.
The arthropods continue on unchanged.
Yet, it's not too late for humans if they only
Look with open eyes, with ears that hear
With sure and ready hands and feet.
Now is the time for action, no time for delay.
On Comedy
In America
Four male clowns entertain consumers
By diverting their attention from reality
Deciding for the nation on personal subjects
Witness: should children be born
or not, or not, or not, or not, or not
And whether women deserve control
Of their bodies
Or the birthplace of their president
And which of many gods is best
(now that's a laugh)
In the world of reality
Starving children,
Dying mothers,
Angry fathers,
Take up arms to ease their plight
To fight the might of
Wealthy
Greedy
Modern
Civilization
