Apparently, tree height is important. I don't live in Michigan, nor does my State Commonwealth rate many electioneering visits, but I most certainly have had tree height on my mind the past few days. Here at Top Comments we strive to nourish community by rounding up some of the site's best, funniest, most mojo'd & most informative commentary, and we depend on your help!! If you see a comment by another Kossack that deserves wider recognition, please send it to topcomments at gmail by 9:30pm Eastern. Please please please include a few words about why you sent it in as well as your user name (even if you think we know it already :-)), so we can credit you with the find!
NOTE: Bowing to that newfangled DK4 stuff :-), you also may send nominations to the Top Comments group email. If you don't see a nomination you made to there in the diary, please pipe up - it means we're still trying to remember not to forget to check!
Casa Brillig may not be large enough to occupy a brush-clearing President, but it's got plenty of trees. Of varying heights, I might add. Two nice maples in the front yard, a variety of oak, maple and ash in the back. Our neighbors have trees, too... including the one directly behind us. They're down a hill and the land abutting ours is, well... brushy, meaning they don't check it often. One of their trees, well...
It became an ex-tree. It was not pining for the fjords, it was in fact bereft of life. Most definitely, it had hopped the twig.
And Saturday, while we were en route to Casa Moody Loner to celebrate Little Loner's birthday, the height of said tree became no longer right. In order to truly appreciate the not-rightness of said height, you'll need to take this bit here:
You did add the part laying down stunned over by the rock, right? OK, now add to that those bits over there:
Don't forget the lovely plumage canopy over there by the swings:
There you have it, the height of one Massachusetts tree. I wonder if Mitt would say it was the right height? Then again, I'm sure he wouldn't have to concern himself with cleaning up said tree, as he'd simply move to another of his houses. Perhaps in Bolton?
(Thankfully the tree hit nothing but our chainlink fence and some Verizon/Comcast wires that didn't run to our house anyway. Damage is minimal, cleanup will lead to much firewood. We coincidentally have an arborist scheduled for Monday to pre-emptively remove two dead ash trees, so perhaps we can strike a deal to have him remove this mess as well)
Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything
without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do
not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down.

In mcjoan's diary Democrats see electoral gold in birth control fight, but do they see women's health?, Damnit Janet issues a warning: Caution: Do Not Enter My Vagina!

"You don't know what you got 'til it's gone..."Babsnc relates a trip to Beijing and the experience of the pollution:
At night in my hotel room, I would wake up at about 2:00 am every night and smell horrible smokey air. It took me awhile to realize that they must release this pollutant at that time to minimize risk during the day. What they didn't realize is that (to me) it was so bad it would seep into buildings and keep me up. I had to pull the covers over my face just to block out this horrible air.
By the end of my time there I couldn't wait to be able to breath clean air. Air we here in the US take for granted. My lungs began to hurt by the end of my trip. I just couldn't understand how people could live in a constant state of pollution like that. It is taking its toll on those poor people. I really fell for them.
I left there with a new appreciation for the good environmental laws we have here and vowed never to take them for granted. If you give industry free reign, they will recreate this nightmare.
Thank you environmentalists for all your effort and work on our behalf!!!! I am truly grateful and humbled by your farsighted work. If you haven't been to a polluted Chinese city, you have no idea of the nightmare they helped us avoid.
From the excellent post China is Imploding by beach babe in fl
And, because it is so true... let's repeat that last portion of Babs' comment: Thank you environmentalists for all your efforts and work on our behalf!!! I am truly grateful and humbled by your farsighted work...
From Chrislove:
In Scott Wooledge's fantastic diary about the Lavender Scare, that enormous part of McCarthy Era everybody seems to ignore, davidincleveland left this breathtaking comment sharing how the anti-gay witch hunts affected him as an eight-year-old. It offers an important glimpse into the ripple effects of McCarthyism.

I have been duly chastised by ravagerofworlds2 and promise never to commit such an offense again.
From Yours Truly, brillig:
This comment by GoGoGoEverton brought to my unsubtle attention a beautiful line I'd missed in agnostic's diary My butler gave notice. I may vote democrat.
Randolph06 said exactly what I think every time I see those two words together.
