Here is the Press Statement from our campaign:
It is now clear that Congresswoman Chellie Pingree will likely run for the United States Senate seat being vacated by Senator Olympia Snowe. I applaud her decision and have instructed my team of staff and volunteers to collect signatures for her Senate race as well as my Congressional race over the next several days.
This is an historic opportunity for Maine – sending a Democrat to the Senate for the first time in nearly twenty years. I look forward to helping with that effort. Now, Democrats must ensure that we hold onto her vacant seat in Congress and send a strong, progressive voice to continue her great work.
For my campaign, there is not a moment to waste. I will bring new energy and vision to the United States Congress - the race has changed, but my moral guideposts have not. I want to ensure economic security for Maine’s middle class families.
The potential shift of the balance of power in Washington presents a unique opportunity to achieve greater social justice and economic fairness for all, and to improve the state of health care, education, and the environment. As we have recently seen, we must continue to fight to preserve basic civil rights, including even womens’ access to contraception. This is no ordinary time. There is a lot at stake, and I am ready to meet the challenges presented.
