“Just so y’all know, we’re ashamed the President of the United States is from Texas.”
And with that so started the tornado. With Conservative commentators across the country calling them Sadaam’s Angels, The Dixie Sluts, traitors, morons … well you all get the point. One comment, one that didn’t even contain a single derogatory statement about then President George W. Bush other than the band’s own disagreement (or shame) with his actions sent what was at the time the single biggest musical act on the planet into a tail spin. Almost every radio station south of the Mason Dixon line removed them from their rotation. Concerts all across the south were cancelled and protested. Fans were encouraged to show up en masse and burn their Chicks albums, t-shirts, posters etc. And who was the single loudest voice in that choir of intolerance? None other than Rush Hudson Limbaugh III.
More about that stupid bitch Karma below the apple-pie hatin’, commie cuddling squiggle.
Maines says her peace
It is rare that Karma is sooooo sweet as this. First of all I want to say I'm not a big fan of the Dixie Chicks. I have nothing against them personally and think they are very talented. Just really not a Country and Western fan. I do however admire them for the toughness and good grace they endured the three years of absolute hate they were subjected to. After it was published that The Chicks lead singer Natalie Maines had stated this, Limbaugh orchestrated what may have been the single most coordinated attack on a contemporary artist in recent memory. He dedicated hour after hour of his show not only decrying the statement Maines made but whipped up a frothing character assassination of all the women in the band, referring to them as sluts, vapid mannequins, absentee mothers, fat lip-synchers and erection killers. He spent hour after hour also discussing that his actions were not censorship but merely the free market at work. According to Rush you are free to speak your mind but the Chicks were out of line. First of all, just so we are clear, you can’t voice any concerns about your President when the country is at war right? That’s just Un-American.

Secondly when you voice an opinion many American’s don’t like you reap what you sow and there is nothing wrong or sinister about it. It’s simply the market at work.
Now let’s compare:
“Just so y’all know, we’re ashamed the President of the United States if from Texas.”
VS
Rush
And that's just one comment in a three day long tirade. So what is the conclusion? Well fellow Kossaks, you decide. Three days of non stop vitriol against a grad student or one comment against a President who lied to send us to war? The Dixie Chicks spent 3 years in the wilderness over this. How long does Rush deserve?
And lastly, one of the great fuck all y'all songs of all time :-)
