And that was on February 26th. He has yet to be arrested.
Let me paint a picture for you - A 17 year old 140 pound unarmed black CHILD is gunned down like a dog while walking by a man who is IN HIS CAR. This means he had to get out of his car, confront the kid, and then shoot him. And the person who shot him hasn't yet been arrested.
Why?

Martin, 17, was shot and killed Feb. 26 by a neighborhood crime watch captain.
The circumstances of the shooting are still unknown, but the 26-year-old man who shot Martin, George Zimmerman, gave a statement to police that he shot in self-defense.
Martin's grieving family said the teen went out around 7:30 on that Sunday during the NBA All-Star Game halftime to get snacks from a nearby 7-Eleven convenience store. He purchased Skittles candies and an Arizona iced tea for his stepbrother.
Trayvon Martin
UNARMED CHILD. UNARMED!!!
He is claiming self-defense, even though he was following Martin, said Sanford Police Chief Bill Lee.

Perhaps I'm naive, but doesn't there need to be proof of self defense? And how could FOLLOWING SOMEONE be self defense? Regardless of the outcome, more light needs to be shed on this case.
He had gone to a convenience store to buy some Skittles candy and was returning home when he was confronted by an armed man who was head of the local neighborhood watch, family member said.
Another article just posed by the Huffington Post that I hope will keep this from slipping under the radar:

"They say they are still investigating," Crump said. "I'm not sure what there is to investigate. What's suspicious about this kid? That's what the family is crying out, that our kid is like any other kid."
Except he's not white. Imagine if this were an unarmed white kid gunned down by a black man. His claim of self defense would at the very least have to be proven.
As a mother, my heart breaks for this child and his family.

An attorney for the family of Trayvon Martin, the teenager shot to death last month by a neighborhood watch captain in an Orlando, Fla., suburb, said police withheld the shooter's violent past from the slain youth's family.

After Zimmerman called police, Crump and Jackson said, he should have backed off. He should not have confronted the teen and had no business patrolling his neighborhood like a cop with a gun, they said.
Both sides agree that Trayvon and Zimmerman scuffled before the shooting, and there is evidence to corroborate Zimmerman's self defense claims, the chief said.
When police arrived, an officer overheard Zimmerman complain, "'I was yelling for someone to help me but no one would help me,'" according to an incident report released Thursday. It also noted that, the back of Zimmerman's shirt was wet and had grass clippings on it, as if he'd been on his back on the ground.
A Link to a petition to prosecute Zimmerman for Tayvon's murder: (although I agree with the commenter who said it ought to be to 'arrest' and the decision to prosecute be left to Attorney General.)
