Today my dog Lucky and I joined 65,000 of our closest friends in Madison to remind Governor John Doe Walker that he is toast.
The weather was balmy and in the course of the day we met up with several Kossacks.
At a pre-rally gathering several blocks away from the Capitol Square, noise of rain invited L.A. MacPup and I to step up to the people's Mic. I enjoined the crowd to go after Walker with a hickory switch and a clear conscience. I then asked Lucky if he had anything to add, he chose the wiser path and held his tongue. Next, we had a bit of pleasant (but too short) conversation with Sark Svemes.
Moments later, Giles Goat Boy came down the pike and we were soon joined by Jorogo, Sandhill Crane and Wisco Wherls.
We were serenaded by a whimsically dressed orchestra. Fun!
As one of the Solidarity Singers, Giles had to be at the big rally site early.
Lucky and I served as his entourage, shooing away the paparazzi and clearing a path through the squealing teen bobbysoxers. Perhaps I exaggerated a little. A lady named Susan wanted to take a picture of Giles' cool sign which read:
Hey Ho, Hey Ho. Scott Walker is John Doe!
Susan didn't squeal very much and I don't recall if she was wearing bobby socks.
Before the rally began, we used our newfangled portable telephones to locate
Quicklund
and his woozles, Gunny and Chief.
The rally was in full swing with the Solidarity Singers, John Nichols, Mahlon Mitchell, et al in an impressive program of oration and song.
I had never met Puddytat in person, but had her phone number. Making contact, Quicklund and I joined her at the foot of the "Forward" statue.
Puddytat
We made ourselves comfortable and were soon joined by Kossacks vacilando and Kepler. Lucky warmed right up to his new pals. Quicklund's name is engraved on Lucky's heart as the provider of freeze-dried liver treats. Dogs in heaven eat such ambrosia.
L. A. MacPup and vacilando:
As the rally progressed, a sweet woman of a certain age approached us and asked If she could pet our dogs. She told me she came from Grafton and I remarked that I had grown up in that area. She then asked :"Are you ruleoflaw?" And I said "Yes I am and this is Lucky Angus MacPup. You must be Peptabysmal!"
She confessed that she was, indeed, Peptabysmal and told how she had recognized Lucky from the pictures I had posted on DailyKos.
Peptabysmal, Lucky and ruleoflaw
Lucky and I had a grand time.
While we were in town, we bumped into several of my old union brothers. It was good to see my boys again.
When the rally was over, we made our goodbyes and Giles, Lucky and I stopped at the Capitol Brewery on State Street for refreshments. They have some tables out on the sidewalk and several rally-goers were enjoying the last rays of the glorious afternoon. We had some laughs and Lucky foraged under the table for unidentified food-like objects.
I live about an hour's drive from Madison. Lucky had had such an exciting day that he snoozed in my lap for the entire drive home.
Puddytat has a fine diary up about today's rally here.
Mark E. Andersen has a great photo diary up here.
