Last Saturday, the OB/GYN Society of Georgia, located in metro Atlanta and a strong advocate for women's health, had its offices broken into and two laptops stolen. The Gwinnett County police said the burglars moved quickly and the Executive Director, Pat Cota, said "they knew what they were after."
What they were after was information on the society's members - some 1,000 medical doctors who belong to the organization.
What's suspicious is that the Georgia Legislature is currently considering several bills to restrict abortion rights even further than the state already has in past years. House Bill 954, a so-called "fetal pain" bill, passed a Senate committee yesterday and is expected to pass the General Assembly before it adjourns.
The OB/GYN Society has lobbied against any bill that would restrict a woman's right to choose an abortion. The Senate bill does more than that - it essentially could criminalize a medical procedure, according to the OB/GYN Society.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported in a follow-up story this afternoon that the Gwinnett police are still looking for the suspect or suspects. To me, suspects could include anyone who supports the Senate and House legislation and would like to intimidate a whole group of physicians who happen to think otherwise. I guess we should stay tuned...
